Wow, I had no idea this was such a common problem. Mine was fine all the way up until I took it to a detailer one day to get the interior done. When I got the car back and drove off, I stepped on the gas and all of the sudden the floormat shot forward toward the firewall. I was like, WTF?? I figured they probably smacked the clip or tugged on it really hard knocking it loose while they were cleaning the carpet.

I drilled a hole through the clip and the floor, and put a small bolt through the floor. Never had a problem since.

Bozz Speed has actually designed a pretty elegant solution to this problem:

I replaced my carpet floor mats with with the rubber all weather mats. Their bigger and heavier so they don't slide around and it absorbs a lot of vibration so your feet don't get that tinglely feeling after long drives.

I drilled a hole through mine into the floor board and put a rivet in it. Rock solid

I also had this problem with my 2002 wrx, and my 06 sti. I thought the clip in the evo was better. In both Subarus the floor mat always got unhooked from the clip. THe clip was worthless even when it stayed in place. At 25000 miles I have not had a problem yet.
