Clutch in over speed bump?

My little brother just got a mazdaspeed 6, and he was telling me not to have my clutch in while i go over speed bumps....it makes no sense to me because isnt that the same as neutral? Has anyone ever heard of this before?

It shouldn't matter as long as you aren't burning your clutch while trying to drive over the speed bump.

This should be in the newbie forum...not just newbie to EVO...newbie to driving standard.

The main thing that gets worn when you have the clutch pedal depressed/clutch disengaged is the throwout bearing...when you have the car in nuetral nothing is stressed.

It doesn't particularly matter, unless you've got the clutch halfway between and you're riding it.

i always use the clutch over speed bumps. the car is to low to go any faster than 3mph. tell your brother he MAY need replace the throwout bearing, or he WILL relpace the front lip/exhaust/suspension/rocker pannels when he hits speed bumps at 20mph

Yes its common sense. If your car is lowered then creep over the speed bump in 1st gear. Depending on how crucial the bump is, you might get away with coasting over it on neutral. Better safe than sorry.

I have heard people say that you should even ease off the brakes before going over speed bumps because the shock of the bump should fall on the suspension rather than the calipers and brake pads - same argument. If you are going over a four inch high speed bump at 30mph you obviously aren't worried about such things in the first place!

wait, how in the hell would the brake calipers be taking the load of a bump in any situation where the car's wheels are on? if you were driving on the rotors I could see but HUH?

The legitimate reason to ease off the brakes right before hitting the bump is to transfer the weight of the car from the front to the back a bit more. Softens the impact a bit.
