I watched a TV show on driving safety a while back. Deer or squirrel, the safest thing you can do is to step on the brakes firmly and don't attempt to go around it. Hopefully, you might stop before you hit the animal. If you can't, it's safer to just hit them for you own safety. Just some info on defensive driving that I watched...

? those pix don't really show the freeway exit. only where i landed, and how the hill looks. CHP all ready matched the skidmarks that show i slammed on my brakes and when it swerved and hit the curb.
