I was the one they did the article on. I was actually surprised at the wording he chose in the article. I more or less explained the cutout as a device that i can use to run my stock catback on the street, and open at the track. Oh well, what's done is done.

If it were me I would have had the news paper editor black out my license plates and keep my identity "anonymous"

i like how if u listen to the picture slideshow with him talking, he talks about racing kids in their daddy beamer. this guy is a goon. he says he likes when the turbo whines too...i thought that was superchargers that did that
relax homeboy, in the grand scheme of things, this doesnt affect you. The audio you hear in the slideshow is all edited, believe me there was a lot more to it. What they choose to use is what they use. Live and learn.

You may have nailed it right there with the first two words of your post.

I guess the only thing now is will I have to worry about being profiled when I drive around? Will my chances of getting pulled over and asked to pop the hood increase because of a newspaper article?

In addition, I would expect the editor of this article to know better as he has written articles for other import tuner magazines in the past... I must say I am shocked and a bit disappointed at him, as thru this article, I think "too much info"
on the EVO owners mods were given

i dunno, i guess it's my bad for not reviewing the thing before he released it. whatever...if anyone on here really thinks this will affect the amount of times they get pulled over versus the amount of times some newb rolls an evo on the highway or smashes into a wall..you're fooling yourself. So relax.

Cut-outs, electronic or manual are illegal in the state of Illinois. But i guess who cares. I don't think state troopers would go down on their knees just to check them out.

Sorry you guys had to see this but I couldn't believe that it made it into the NY Times.
His car is stock appearing (other than the C-West front bumper), makes some excellent power, uses parts from vendors that support this site and he daily drives it. I don't see where the 'crap compared to 90% of the evo's on this website' comment comes from. If anything, this car is in the upper 90% of the evo's on this website, because it embodies what the evo culture is all about. It's got a clean look, good power and, most importantly, gets driven on a daily basis. I think a majority of people on this site can relate to what this article presents and anyone who's truly daily drives their car in New York City knows the kind of headaches that have to be put up with in terms of traffic, gridlock, knuckleheads on the street and road rage. And who can truly say that they haven't pushed their evo a little? I'm sure if the owner wanted to be kept at the 50 MPH speed limit on the highway, he would have certainly just gotten a Lancer. Let he/she who is without sin point his/her finger and cast the first stone, because it seems that there are way too many cannonized saints popping up on this site lately.

As far as how the NY Times got the lead on this article, it came up on our Evo-NY site as a request from one of the reporters looking for a vehicle to do a feature on. The media has a funny way of turning and twisting things to serve their own purposes. Remember, they are there to sell copy, and the more spectacular and on-the-edge a story sounds the more they feel they will get a captive audience. That slideshow was an edited compilation of what was spoken, and not the entire conversation. How does anybody know what was said that didn't make it off the editing room floor? Passing judgement on someone based on the words of another person makes the one passing judgement look more foolish than anything else. For Christ's sake, in the slideshow they said the '05 evo comes with 236 horsepower. This reporter either doesn't know what he's talking about or he doesn't know how to fact check his own work.

In the end, the subject car is owned and driven by one of my top TSE/Evo-NY guys and I'd appreciate it if everyone could keep the comments to a mature level and realize the article is-what-it-is.

Yeah... I think you guys are blowing this out of proportion. Cops prob dont give two ****s about the article and probably dont know that it exist. Even if they did, only people in new york should worry. All you guys out of state throwing fits for no reason at all, calm down. Cops arent reading the New York Times out there and if they were they wouldnt be cops....

this is why i dont bother posting on here, i mean come on whats the point of a cut-out...to be stealthy am i wrong? its to have the power of straight thru exhaust but still have the ability to pass emissions and not get hasseled for a modded exhaust, the reporter obviously would want to know the modifications to a car hes writing about, maybe he just thought that to joe-smo on the street an exhaust cut-out is like idk very street racing-ish who knows but odds are he blew that outta proportion just like the rest of stuff stated about the car, n to the 90% BS i herd flying around, C-West bumper + daily driver i give this guy more credit then me i would ever throw down the doe for that bumper and daily drive it my stock 8 bumper is thrashed, so i know what it is to be an enthusiast that wants the mods but rocks it daily, seriously stop and look at yourself befor you comment on anything, if it makes u sound like your the best, just dont post it, we all want to have the nicist car and the problem is everyone has there own opinion on what makes it the best, was the reporter dumb...yes, your opinion is your opinion post if you want but man people get outta hand on here

^^so daily driving a car with a c-west front bumper is an amazing feat now i assume?....

forums are made so people can post their opinions, if you dont like other peoples opinions, dont look. im sure the press changes the story around and all that crap. bottom line is its not gonna affect me at all. but im just giving my opinion, it does not help the evo community out because the way they wrote that story..talking about speeding in traffic and what-not. cops arent going to read this and go after every loud car now.

but to bring me back to my first question.... what is the point of the article?

It's just a section the guy does every month on cars and their owners, nothing more. It's not a car magazine, and he was looking for an example of a daily driven New York City Evo. The roads in NY are pretty brutal, so driving around lowered with any kit is a *****. Matter of fact my cwest got damaged right after the photos were taken. I don't blame you for having an opinion, everyone does...but do you need to call people names? And yes, the press always twists words, it's their job. They need to make the article sound exciting somehow.

Relax man. The evo in the pics is a very toned down version of what the car used to be. The old pics are on here somewhere in show and shine, i reduced the cars dress up mods so it's more suitable for daily driving. Like i said, the slide show is only bits and pieces of everything i said. What they used isn't up to me.
