The Official 50k check in!!
Ok my 03 evo 8 just turned over 50k miles today. Heres a list of problems, and/or condition of the car after this much mileage.
MOTOR: ( Intake, exhaust, MBC, Tune, motor mount, walbro fuel pump.)
Idles perfect, boosts perfect. Theres a little bit of lifter/valve noise but nothing to worry about. Nothing bad to report.
DRIVETRAIN: (All Stock, except for ACT clutch)
Grinds when cold, 5th gear grinds, somewhat notchy, clutch chatters but does hold strong with no slippage, not sure of mileage on the clutch tho.
Transfercase is shot, whines through all gears all the time, although the interal and external seals have been replaced. Other than that nothing else to report.
BODY:
Front bumper was repainted by previous owner, and the hood is carbon fiber, so the typical freckling of the paint does not apply here. BUT, the wheel wells are toast! the paint is gone and the metal has begun to rust, on the front and rear, right where the passenger door jam is!!. Other then that nothing else to report.
INTERIOR:
Drivers seat shows some wear, im not a big guy so its holding up ok. The side bolster is broken and tends to click around if you lean on it just right. The center console suede is wearing, floor mats are wearing in typical spots. All dash lights are still bright, and my A/C knobs all function as they should. Stock HID bulbs are still bright and not burnt out.
OVERALL/ MISCELLANEOUS:
The car still feels great!! Plugs and timing belt will be done soon due to the mileage. All fluids have been replaced with stock fluids, including mobil 1 oil every 3 thousand miles. The car is lowered on GF210's with the stock struts/shocks, but they still seem to be ok ( no leaks, and not too bouncy). The sunroof is broken tho which sucks!!
This thread is for potential buyers of used/new evos just to have as a reference to how the 03's are holding up. Of course its not the highest mileage evo but I hope it helps comfort some people.
> I also drive the car daily, with at least 2 redline pulls a day!!!

I've got 68k on mine. Stock clutch wore out at about 45k miles with 300 ft. lbs. of mods. I had one HID unit go bad, but that was replaced under warranty. STock red brembo's clear coat came off at about 30k miles, and the stock clear coat on the rear wing started turing blotchy white in spots. That's it, everything else is still running tip top with no other issues. Interior is holding up fine, my front clip could use repainting, but that's more a function of the roads I drive and not the stock paint. Mechanically, it's been a great car, but the clear coat peeling on the brembos and rear wing are a pita, but fixed.
I got my new IX in Feb. of this year, and the first thing an Evo owner should do is put a clear coat bra on the front. My Paint is coming off from every little pebble or dirt spec thrown at my car.
I passed the 50K mark a VERY long time ago, I even passed the 75k mile marker last year. The car probably would be over 100K right now but has sat all this year since January when the first built engine went down.
Stock engine, transfer case, and transmission lasted till 74,000 miles which were fairly tough miles but I didn't beat the crap out of the car, and I maintained it well. When it blew it was sitting about 500HP with a 50trim and meth injection.
Everything has been fully built engine, head, transmission, and transfer case after the stock engine blew.
Pretty excited to get it running hopefully before the start of the New Year. Got another fully built engine, this time a 2.0L and a bunch of additional goodies coming. I'm looking for 700HP again, last built engine (2.3L) made it too 600HP.
As far as Mitsubishi quality of parts, general deterioration, the car has gone through 2 spoilers for clear coat issues and now needs the 3rd (2nd replacement), a replacement set of front calipers and front seats. Previous owner appeared to have the rear touched up and I had the front clip repainted once damn rock chips. Otherwise the car is in great shape, no rust, and very clean. I've had tire shops and other Evo owns comment on how clean the car is under the hood, suspension, and interior being clean especially for the miles the car has. I of course keep my car as clean as I can so I know that has helped over the years, and I perform all my own maintenance regularly.

I am just about 60k on my 03.
At 300 AWHP/AWTQ the car boosts and idles well. It still has the normal 4G63 tick, happening since I got it. Very little maintainence. Had the timing belt, waterpump, tensioners, etc done last week. Mobil 1 every 5k with a OEM filter, NGK copper plugs every 5-10k.
Stock clutch lasted 40k with 35 or so 2 step launches. Replaced with an Exedy organic. Chatters like hell, but grips nicely after 20k. When it is cold it doesn't like to to go in gear (I suspect it is due to aluminum/brass bushings I replaced everything in the shifter/linkage with). Once warmed up they work well together. No grinding into any gears *knocks on wood*. Fluids were changed at 30k, trans and transfer case were changed again when the clutch was replaced.
Interior still looks good. Some wear on the outside bolster of the drivers seat. Got rid of the ugly stock blue inserts with some fabric paint. Had to take apart the stock armrest and reinforce it with some aluminum plates after I cracked it.
Outside the paint is exceptional for it's age. Waxed and detailed religiously. As far as defects: some chips on the front end, chip in the windshield, PINK Brembos, and melted bumper opening (now covered by a stainless piece).
