Many people have taken theirs off with no ill effects. People act like if water gets into the engine bay that it will die. It is not like the engine bay is waterproof.

I have read the design of the fins facilitates the exiting of the hot air while driving. Without it, there is a decreases in the quantity of hot air exiting the engine bay. If I remember correctly, air turbulence has a big effect on this phenomenon without the 'shield' on.

I've only read about this...not stating it as fact.

I honestly think there is a negligible difference, but don't quote me on that.

+1 it was engineered to be more efficient in removing hot air from the motor while the car is in motion. However it will not hurt your car without it, just dont drive in a monsoon with an open element filter

I take mine off in the summer on nice days. Rain and track days i put it back in. Sitting in traffic with it out helps to release more of the hot air coming off of my manifold.
