Tread came right off my tire

So im driving home the other day and I hear something smacking against my wheel well. I pull over and there is an inch thick strand of tread unraveled from my tire. Is this normal for the stock tires to go at 9,800 miles? Also, i have to obviously get new tires. So what is a good set thats not to pricey? I want all season if possible.

I would say what you are describing is not normal by any means. For a good all season tire I have been using Toyo Proxes 4's and have had good luck with them.

I would recommend the Continental ContiExtremeContact, I had those on my last car. Best wet traction I've ever had in a tire. It doesn't snow here, but reviews at Tire Rack give it the highest snow rating in the ultra high performance all season category. Dry grip is acceptable for a 400 treadwear tire. With aggressive driving they lasted 35k miles, with normal driving you'll be above 40k easy.

The price is really affordable too, in the stock 235/45R17 they are only $98 from Tire Rack.

Forgot to ask: What was your rotation schedule like?

When you say "strand of tread" do you mean just from the inside of the tread? Depending on driving habits, 9,800 miles is a long time for the stock A046 as they are very soft with low treadwear. What could have happened is that you let the inside of the tire go bald due to negative camber resulting in the tread coming off.

It's deceptive because the tire looks like it has tread on the outer edge. Only if you take the tires off or turn the steering wheel full lock to one side can you see the entire tread wear.

Used to have those on my old car, an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro and they do really well in the snow- Lots of trips up snowboarding and driving in bad snow storms... good dry traction too

Bingo! The inner tire for both front tires are bald. And on the drivers front side on the inner part of the tire the tread is ripped off.

This same thing happened to me on the stocke Advans, they were worn and needed to be changed. The extreme camber wore the inner tread bad and it starts to get into the sidewall. I'm now on Falken Azenzis and the tread wear being 200 is just a little harder than the Advans but the tread block design is much better. Totally happy with the Azenzis RT615's....but yet this same thing happened to me Twice.

your not going to get a free tire they are soft tires probably one of the softest tires that come on any car they go every 15000 miles or so with normal driving, just buy any cheap tires and call it a day you wont see that much of a diffrence

I have been driving on the Kumho ASX's for 7k miles and love them. They still have a bunch of tread left on them and handle great in the rain.

Wow, sounds like you got a used semi-truck tire with a new tread glued on it!
