Tread came right off my tire
This happened to me as well... I had 29,000 miles though and the tires had some* tread left.. but it was almost time to start looking for a new set. It happened on the inside part of the front passenger tire... but it was because I have lowering springs and the alignment i guess was a little bit off... which I learned from the tire.
I just got michelin PS2's. Pricey at approx $200 per tire, but cheaper than Advans. Goodyear F1's are good and cheaper. And they are symetric so they can be flipped, unlike the PS2's. While summer tires, both are good in the wet. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the top tires. Do NOT be tempted by Yokohama ES100's - they are not worth their cheap price!
I would agree with some of these other guys and get the Kumho ASX, I've never used them but have also read good reviews from other drivers. Tire Rack does have them in stock in 235/45ZR17 for $96 per tire.
The Avon Tech M550 is also another choice to consider, good reviews and decently priced.

That's what I got- Tein S springs- inside of fronts went rather quickly after a couple of spirited drives- switched to Maxxis all-season tires and I have about 10k mi and no wear and decent grip. It hasn't snowed yet, rain grip is good, dry grip is great. Of course not as great as the stock Advans but I'll manage- find a local dealer for the Maxxis tires, I got all 4 for $325 mounted and balanced
