Difficult stud removal from hotside
Well im going to a machine shop to get a broken stud removed from the hotside of my turbo. One shop told me that the stud was like grade 10 aircraft quality and he had no idea why Mitsu used such a hard stud and it has to be grinded out b/c a normal drill would burn right up. Anyone else have this problem?
yeah I did......
Drilled them out by hand with the help of my friend, we had to sharpen the drill bits every minute because the studs are so hard and chewed the drill bit up. If it wouldn't have been a Saturday evening I would have went to a machine shop but I needed the car by Sunday night. So needless to say 6 hours later we had the studs drilled out.
Although 4 bolts now make the manifold easy to take off and put back on I wished I would have left the 2 studs alone....that was a nightmare.

ok dude I had the same problem. did not break bits or go to a machine shop. I wish I hd taken pix of it but I didnt so here it goes. First I took a dremel and cut of wheel to cut the broken stud flush to the hot side. Then using a assortment of drill bits I gradually drilled out the hole a little bigger each time. the trick here is to use cutting oil. can be purchased at most hardware stores, auto parts stores, and plumbing supplies. as long as you keep the bit and the bolt you are drilling lubed up you should be good. if you see the bit start to smoke back off and re oil. after all of the bolt was removed i used a 10x10.25 tap to rethread the hole.again cutting oil is your friend. since it is cast its going to be very tough to do be very tough to do by hand. I used a cordless drill on the slowest speed and worked it back and forth till I had a nicely rethreaded hotside. PM if you need any help with it
