AYC in USDM Evo
AYC in USDM Evo
Well, I havent been getting any reponses elsewhere, so I am posting here:
Has anyone done an AYC installation into a US spec Evo VIII? Is it worth it? How much of a driving difference does it make? Thanks!

The cost of the hardware and installation along with the headaches is definitely not worth it. You'd seriously be better off just buying a *warrantied* Evo X with all systems up and running, operating in sync.
Hey, I'm just throwing it out there.... No need 2 be butt heads.
Something tells me that neither of you have driven an AYC Evo either..... Or know what it requires or how much it costs....

Do YOU know what it costs? Do YOU know what parts you need? Have YOU driven an AYC prepped car?

Just get a Robi Spec suspension upgrade and you won't need that,
but... If you really want the AYC you would need to get a Japanese Ecu and the AYC unit. I hear it's against emission's and whatnot, but so is a test pipe. I say go for it. It's really the Ecu that is going to be hardest part now since it will be transferring torque via ayc and acd. With enough effort and persistance anything is possible.

Sorry if honesty hurts your feelings.
No, I haven't driven an AYC-equipped Evo. I'm sure that it's more effective than the standard mechanical LSD, but the fact of the matter is that on any given course, all other factors identical, the addition of AYC isn't going to shave anything significant off of your lap times... at least nothing significant enough to justify the time and money necessary to pull this off. It's NOT cheap, not by a longshot.
Look at it this way. Rewind to 2006. You have your Evo VIII, but the IXs come out and have the new 4G63s with the MIVEC and greater, easier modding experience. Would it make sense to do an engine swap? Absolutely not. While the newer engine is definitely a step above, the time and money involved isn't worth it. You'd be better off just sticking with your original motor and modding it or just buying a new IX if you want its engine so bad. Same thing with AYC and the Evo X.
I remember when I first started reading this forum, the same discussion was had as one of the original threads where people were whining about how the original '03 VIII was coming here without ACD or AYC, though some guys were saying that while they definitely help the car's handling, the vast majority of drivers wouldn't really notice the difference in the vast majority of driving situations (whether on the street or at the track), plus the car would still handle quite well... and it did.
EDIT:
A very good point. While certain suspension upgrades definitely aren't replacement for serious hardware like a differential and will not provide the same "feel," there are certain things you can do to a car to at least make it as quick around a track.
I believe that the AYC was yanked out for some emissions equipment. Removing this probably isn't an easy task, plus it's illegal and your car would probably no longer comply with emissions regulations. And while a test pipe is also illegal, it's at least something that you could install or remove in a rather short period of time with a couple hand tools. An AYC, however...
