How To Drive Your Evo
How To Drive Your Evo
I have never owned a turbo or even an awd car. I have a 340hp Cobra Mustang but I am trading it in on an EVO in August. I am almost embarassed to ask but, how do you drive an AWD turbo car. Im used to pulling up to a light and dropping it at 4 grand and lighting up my tires. How do you get a good start without burning clutch and what is it like when you're into the boost. Im just looking for some import help for a domestic guy. And im a newbie so anything will help. Thanks GtG
I also came from RWD V8 cars (supercharged '02 GT and an '01 Camaro SS). It's an entirely different ballgame with the Evo.
Some on here recommend starting at 5g and slipping into it. Every time I tried to do that, I would just roast the stock clutch (taking care of that soon with an Exedy twin disc). At the DSM shootout where REAL Evo drivers were launching their cars and getting good times, everyone I talked to was bringing it up to 6k+ and dropping it (or slipping "very fast" as one guy told me) and cutting 2.0 or better 60'.
Oh, forget about wheelspin
it's all just drama anyways, real performance lies in traction

So why did the japanese keep these cars off American Soil for so long? If all it took was 4wd 4 banger turbos to impress many of the american iron people.
Imagine if the Skyline makes it over here. 3.0L Turbo AWD. My needs now though are 4 doors, maybe 4 door skyline will show up...
enough rambling though.. Drive it on a track. Not a strip or the street. you can get by steering the car around the street and the strip is too short for 12 - 13 seconds to enjoy the Evo. Get to a local track ASAP! if it's your first time, get an instructor to take you for a few laps. and keep a chin strap with you or a drool cup so as not to get anything on the nice recaros.
