It is 100% the clutch. It first starts slipping higher gears because they require more load. This is common for all evo's to have their clutch's go. Mine went at 14k miles. I just replaced it. The dealership said its not because you are gonna try and have them warranty it which they will never do. Order a clutch.

I bleieve its a clutch also but it could be the transmission itself...meaning the forks on the gears arent moving on all the way and are either bent or loose...but id try fixing the clutch because its a cheaper option then if that doesnt work youve got an internal transmission problem

Do my clutch test. It's easy and safe...

1) Park the car on a flat surface

2) Pull the E-Brake as tight as you can

3) Put vehicle in 5th gear

4) Slowly let go of the clutch

5) If RPMs drop then the clutch is fine

or

6) the RPMs rise or don't drop much, clutch is slipping

This is good advice but question: if you owned an VIII (and I realize he doesn't), couldnt this potentially damage the center diff?

You're not forcing the car to do anything to damage any components. All you're doing is placing a little bit of load on the tranny.

Don't take my advice and mash the gas while stationary.

Ok, but in an VIII, isn't that also placing an unnatural stress on the center diff? Not at all meaning to start an argument, just looking for clarification.

It's not bad advice, I just think nearly the same thing could be done by putting in to 5th and just driving at a low speed. I've heard that pulling your handbrake on an AWD vehicle can destroy your center diff, which is why I ask.

my understanding is that without acd, with the handbrake pulled the car will still attempt to send power to both the front and rear. Having the rear locked up, even at a really low rpm can still torque the rear and potentially cause you quite a bit of headache WRT the center diff and the t-case...but this is just my understanding. Anyone who knows for certain - please kick down the knowledge.

Realize that you're NOT attempting to send power. All you are doing is pre-loading the tranny.

This advice was given to me by Brad at mellon tuning who has an 8.

Take it with a grain of salt.

Well Ive E-braked through a few turns and the evo loved it

My car does exactly what youre describing. My clutch is bad......Your clutch is bad too.Hope youre ready to dump $675 for clutch+$500ish on install.
Listen to everyone here when they tell you to avoid dealerships at all costs in the future.Even general maintence scares me at mitsu thus I never returned warranty valid for 14k more and all.

This is their way of telling you "they have no experience doing clutches and cant afford to fudge up your car"
