I'd say it will be your clutch, or synchro's that are at fault.

I had the same problem with mine, and was told by Ralliart that it's a common problem with synchro's on the 5 speed box, although your dealer will investigate the clutch first.

I am really having a problem shifting into second from first gear. This is mainly when I am just cruising around easily. I typically shift at about 3000 rpm.

It seems to go better if I shift quicker by pushing it into second rather quickly so the revs dont have a chance to fall off. When I try and take it easy and baby it to avoid a synchro grind this is when it usually happens. It seems if I baby it, it makes the problem worse. The car is a ix MR and has almost 9000 miles.

mine does this too. I've been experimenting for the past week and seems like a quick flick into second works the best for me. I'm getting a lot more smoother engagements.

Got a grind going into 2nd today. And usually get some crazy notches going into 2nd. It was smooth as butter yesterday but today it was pretty bad. Its so bad when the car is cold i go from 1st to 3rd. It seems when the car is warm, like yesterday it was pretty hot, it felt great. Maybe a fluid issue? I am at 44k miles, maybe i should change the fluids.

yeah its bad when its cold but just a matter of getting fluid to operating temps. Definitely change the fluid I recently changed mine and the engagements are pure butter.

Yes I agree I have been doing that for the last 2 days and MUCH smoother.

I shouldnt need to change my fluids yet with only 9k on it.

The manual says 30k miles for regular use, 15k for severe use. You're way overdue.

Just picked up my IX MR and I noticed on the drive home from the dealer that putting it in 6th was a real PITA. I have to really muscle it in. Theres no "crunch" just a lot of resistance. Bent shifter fork maybe???

But as far as gear grinds, I only get it going into 4th sometimes, but get grinding all the time going into 4th and 5th at speeds above 50mph.

I dont even bother with 6th anymore......looking to just take it to the dealer soon.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it myself?

I would change the fluid along with tc and rear diff. Although my car only had 7k miles when i picked her up, it just made me feel a lot better when I changed them.

What you think is going on with my 6th gear? Or do you believe changing the fluids will take care of it?

I haven't read or found too many guys one here with this problem.

Sorry to say, your synchros are shot. I developed a 5th gear grinding problem before. It'll get worse and worse, then wear your gears away. Take it to the dealership, hopefully under warranty, before the gears get shot too.

well I just read your previous post and you say you have to muscle it into 6th. For me, I never get a smooth shift into 6th but its not like i'm muscling it in. A fluid change may solve it but since you say you have to muscle it in, there may be something else behind it. See what happens Also my 4th to 5th also isn't smooth but it doesn't grind. I find my 3-4 shift to be pure cake.

Yea like I mentioned in the above post, it'll take me a good 3-4 seconds to pull it back into 6th. Once its in its all fine and dandy. Taking it out is equally as hard too. I've never experienced shifting like this before.

When I get off work tonight I'll try and go through the gears with the car off and I think then it should be definitve as to wether it is the fluid or the tranny itself.

Oh btw I assume I can just pick up all the necessary fluids at the dealer, correct??
Sorry noob question...
