Megan Racing dB

Cant seem to find the information I need anywhere so....

I realize there are many factors that can determine the loudness of your exhaust(like mods), but I am wondering if anyone knows the db ratings based on the SAE J-1169(45 degree angle, 20 inches away, at 3/4 throttle) on an otherwise stock evo with a Megan Racing Turboback exhaust with the resonator on it(no cat).

I tested it myself and it came to about 100db which is too much, it just seemed kind of high to be so I was wondering if the measurment was off thats all...

The law permits 95db, if it is under that than I am fine. If it is not than I need to make it quieter as cops are starting to become very **** about this, and at least if I am within the legal limit there is nothing that they can do.

I already have a resonated test pipe
I was thinking about putting another resonator in the midpipe or just getting a new quieter cat-back

i have a full 3 inch rnr downpipe, test piping, and two resonators welded on the megan exhuast
I can assure you this is soooo quiet now- slightly louder than stock!

Where do you live? In NY it doesn't matter what the decibal reading is. If the cop thinks its too loud you get a ticket. Anything louder than stock is illegal.

I got pulled over the other day and the cop said that "any modification to you exhaust to make it louder is illegal" well I looked it up on my states website AND that is not true, its actually anything over 95db is illegal, and if you get a ticket for too loud of an exhaust all you need to do is send in proof that it is 95db or quieter with the ticket and they will throw it out

Now, my exhaust is louder than that and so I have to ride around with the silencer in it (no fun) so I am just trying to make it under 95db

I was considering:
a different catback (magnaflow, tanabe medlion, greddy sp2)
removing my resonated test pipe and putting in a muffler
putting in a really long resonator in the midpipe
changing out the muffler with a generic magnaflow or something
getting a high flow cat
and finally i think Apexi makes a variable pressure silencer, but I cannot seem to find any info on these things

i just cannot decide what i want to do, i would be all for just getting a different catback but it seems like they all taper and i don't want that

Maine
motor laws here exist but are rarely enforced, like having no cat is illegal but no one really cares

honestly I could probably drive around forever like that and never get pulled over again, it the first and only time in over a year since that exhaust has been on my car that that has happened

cops never follow me around, they never stare me down, and if they do pull you over they are usually very nice and just give you a warning

yeah i like that one but it seems kind of expensive for what it is, a catback

I have been pulled over for a loud exhaust, and yes it says 95db, but the judge anything to make your stock exhaust louder is illegal. So it really does not matter, if he thinks its to loud, he can cite you for it. plain and simple

I just checked the Maine dmv website and it looks like you have the same law as in NY and the officer is correct. I was in the same position as you and bought a greddy SP2 which is extremely quiet for an aftermarket exhaust. Its funny because the exception in section 6 seem to conflict with section 1 and 3 and seems like a way to ticket you anyway.

well I guess in 2003 SEMA helped enforce the 95db law in maine

A person served with a Violation Summons and Complaint charging a violation of subsection 1 or 3 must provide satisfactory evidence that the muffler or exhaust system does not emit a noise in excess of 95 decibels...
so I realize that I can STILL get a ticket for it, but all I have to do is just prove that I am under 95db, and I figure if I at least have a reasonably quiet exhaust it shouldn't be an issue

I will say that when i got pulled over it was like midnight in the back alleyways of the city I live in, I would say if were any other time it wouldn't have been a problem. The thing is is that I was driving like 30mph in like 3rd gear so it wouldn't have even been that loud...but whatever

I honestly don't think that it will ever be an issue again, especially if I get a quieter exhaust

But also I would just prefer to have something not as loud

I think I'll just go get some catback and a high flow cat, I realize I will lose horsepower but it should be super quiet and be legal

Another thing too is that i have 272 cams which makes things louder, and I am going to get my exhuast manifold and hotside ported soon and I have heard that makes it even louder

I was looking at that too, either one would be fine, they are all quiet

The thing I dont like about that law is it states "Measurements must be made by participating certified inspection stations." so that means you have to find a certified inspection station that does it and it may cost as much as the ticket itself. The loudness I found comes from the catback not the cat. With my greddy SP2, switching from a HFC to testpipe only changes the pitch not the volume.
