You will lose horsepower if you exhaust tapers and not 3 inch all the way. It causes more backpressure and is a bottleneck at the restriction.

common man, what 3-5whp MAX? I heard you have to be over 400hp to notice any power difference between a straight 3" and the exhausts ive mentioned above. Its not worth waisting money on giving an exhaust shop a nice exhaust to cut up. Its also not worth multiple $50 loud exhaust tickets... think about it!

A tuner should chime into this thread

$50? man...on the "warning" or whatever I got it said the ticket would be $150! and just a little more gets me a used exhaust, and a little more a new one! that is why I want to just get an exhaust...

Also, not sure if you're talking 400hp at the crank or 400whp, if you're talking 400whp I eventually plan to be just under that (the max a stock IX turbo will get me with supporting mods)

eventually I will go for more hp, but that will be enough for a while for me

also, that exhaust you're talking about it made by RRE, theres a link below if anyone is interested in it

I think that a 100cell cat might be the answer for me...

from what I have seen the cat seems to bring the noise down quite a bit, ~5db or so I have seen

I was at about 100db +/-3db so minus the 5db would bring me to about 95db +/-3db, hopefully....

Second, I assume the BR cat-back tested came with the bullet muffler which is loud and out of the question for the OP.

3rd,
Gil's evo mr from CT is making 533whp on pump/meth on a stock motor on a ams 35r kit with a reflash on greddy evo 2 catback and the wastegate is recirculated.
that should be more than enough HP to convince you its ok to keep it quiet

But Imagine how much more power he could have made with a freer flowing exhaust. I realize it was too loud for the op but the point is a little less restriction goes a long way which was the original pint. That 3-5 WHP difference you spoke about earlier seems too ideal of a loss. If that were the case, everyone would be getting quiet exhausts. I also remember a thread a read a while back where someone dynoed a greddy SP2 , then switched to a 3 inch full exhaust and gained 16 whp.

Exactly, which is why unless I can find a true full 3" quiet exhaust that offers as much power as a loud one I don't think I will go for it...

My thoughts are that I can still keep my 3" TBE but just go with a 100cell HFC as I have seen that losses with a 100cell HFC are very minimal, like ~5whp....my question is that since it is obviously a more free flowing piece is it even quieter? arg...
