Japanese-built cars have the worst paint in the auto industry due largely to Japan's environmental laws that restrict the composition of the paints they can use and the types of paint application processes they can use. My Evo IX's paint has seemed to hold up better to chips than the last 3 made-in-Japan Hondas I have owned though...

Japanese brand cars built in the US often have better quality, more durable paint because US environmental standards on auto paint are less restrictive.

u drive the car ur going to get rock chips

fact of the matter is, your car is so low mileage mitsubishi might just give u sum free paint work under warranty.

I work for a collision center for mitsubishi's and chevorlet's we have alot of warranty work. Its typical on the yellow, red, and black cars.

The clear mitsu uses is just horrible it has no hardness to it. it fades, peels, and cracks if not waxed alot or took care of.

I got my car clear-bra'd as soon as I bought it and am VERY glad I did. At least I know my hood, fenders, bumpers, headlights, and mirrors are protected

I enjoy taking care of the paint on my cars; it's a hobby of sorts. My GG Evo has zero scratches, swirl marks, rock chips or any other paint-related anomalies and it's not as if it doesn't get driven. My old RR was the same way. Paint needs to be maintained.

I was actually going to ask if anyone has had a bodyshop do this to their car. I had considered doing it myself since having this issue. I'll wait, see if I can get mitsubishi to at least touch-up the bad areas and then maybe just have it done.

your right after getting mitsu or a private paintshop to fix the current chips you have you may be able to prevent further chips on the sideskirts and doors by getting mudflaps. look at where the front quarter panel/sideskirt and rear quarter panel/ sideskirt meet youll notice how even with stock rims and tires the tires stick out past the body, allowing all the road debri to hit your side skirt, door and everything else.

respect for that... and yeah, i'm definitely going to do something. The fact that these tires ( although fun ) are like bubble gum doesn't help either.

I called the dealership back today and the guy said that the district manager or whatever has been there already and will be back in July and they are going to call me and set up an appointment for the car at that time... which I think is sort of stupid to have to wait a month at least to get something done about it... but whatever, I may call mitsubishi directly.

As has been said before, the red Mitsu uses does not have a seperate clear coat on it.

Paint quality is just as bad with Nissan, there are a number of class action lawsuites against Nissan regarding the issue.

The lack of clear is a major reason I did not get a non-metallic color when I bought my Evo. Either way, Mitsus paint quality is poor at best.

Just a quick note about the GT-R's paint... Seems Nissan has that covered too. I'm eager to see if it lives up to its printed specs. I'm skeptical though.

--------------

Paint

The new Nissan GT-R achieves the world's best paint performance, in terms of resistance to chipping and scratches. It comes with a lustrous paint sheen when new - partly through the application of a 'double clear coat' - and maintains this finish due to its uniquely tough paint. Tests have shown that the Nissan GT-R continues to have a blemish-free luster long after rival paints are peppered with stone chips and small abrasions.
This paint strength is especially important on a premium vehicle capable of such high speeds.
A special new color, ultimate metal silver, is also available on the Nissan GT-R. All GT-Rs get an electrodeposition first coat, which bonds especially well to the metal, a special anti-chipping coat, primer, color bases and then clear coats, both hand polished by craftsmen to achieve a perfect paint finish.

My evo has the clear bra as well. It has saved me from several bad chips Im sure. My only issue with the clear bra is that Ive noticed it comes up some in corners with lots of angles. Been great otehrwise

Im in the exact same situation you are. My car has 2000 miles with a whole bunch of paint chips on the hood...I believe it has something to do with rally reds for sure. Im just going to put a carbon fiber hood and call it a day. evos are wayyy to nice to sell over cheap paint even though it hurts so deeply ever time i see each little imperfection
