have 3in TBE...how do i make it quieter

sup y'all......

i just stepped into an evo 9 with 20k on the clock....previous owner put on a customer 3 inch turbo back exhaust with a 'racing' cat (probably 200 cell im guessing)and an unknown coffie can muffler and a crazy loud blow off valve.....

i returned the blow off valve to the stock diverter valve, but the exhaust is still loud to the point that my ears are ringing at the end of the day.......i had a shop put a resonator on it and it's better but it's still pretty freakin loud.....

it's been suggested that i find some kid with a stock exhaust and trade him, but while i still hate the DBs commin out, the irony of throwing away 3500 bucks of custom exhaust kinda makes my *** hurt (met the previous owner and thats what he said he spent of the setup, so who knows)......

it has a drop in filter as well so i figure with that and a chip tune i could get some decent numbers out of it pretty easy.....that's all i would ever want to do to it as far as mods go anyways, so that seems perfect

if i added another muffler or replaced my existing one with a really quiet one, would that just negate the entire advantage of the 3 inch TBE? is it actually impossible to have 'breathability' and quietness or is there some uber expensive super cool magic that i can pull off that would give me both performance in this department and also be quiet?

i do not know the answer to these questions, so somebody please educate me

thanks!

It's hard to spend $3500 on an Evo exhaust, but not impossible I suppose. Most quality TBEs sell for ~$800-1200.

Was the car tuned before you bought it?

If you go with a quieter, straight-through muffler, you may lose a few HP on a car in a basic state of tune.

is it actually impossible to have 'breathability' and quietness or is there some uber expensive super cool magic that i can pull off that would give me both performance in this department and also be quiet?
It has been said that RRE's Stealth exhaust and Buschur's dual-bullet setup do exactly that, though I haven't heard either for myself. I replied to your question, because I've been here for 2 years looking for the same thing. My exhaust is still mostly stock and it will stay that way until I find a product that's quiet enough for my needs. I firmly believe that having a quiet exhaust is what kept me from being cited for moving violations in 12+ years. Good luck.

Instead of rolling your eyes, you could have pointed the OP to your own thread asking for a quiet exhaust:

Buschur 3" stainless TBE with Magna flow muffler has a nice low rumble to it and isn't ridiculously loud. I've had mine on for over 20k miles. I have a catco (gutted) cat so it acts like a resonator and doesn't restrict flow. My five year old son falls asleep within an hour of driving if we are on a road trip. If we are driving around town however he loves to hear it rev!

I remedied mine with "Audio upgrades" I can now drive 80 on the interstate and not here any road noise or exhaust.

You can always be creative like some and put the stock catback on, but using a electric cutout?

I have the 3in HKS High-Flow Exhaust System. When I stomp it to the floor you can't even hear my exhaust. It is a low smooth sound. Yesterday a cop pulled my friend over in his STI, he has the same exhaust and I was in front of him and the cop told him that he heard his exhaust and he didn't hear mine except for my blow off valve HKS SSQV. If you want the full straight pipe then throw a test pipe on their or get the DC Sports 3in downpipe w/cat delete. MY 2cents.

I just put a Megan Racing type2 Black catback. It has a resonator and is black ceramic coated. I have a test pipe and it's not load at all when driving. Best $375 (shipped) I ever spent.
