EVO 9 takes another tranny dump
I would have to agree if is the 2nd NEW trans and it went again it might be your driving. Its possible it was a install error though. When was the 2nd tranny installed? If it was just just recently installed then it could be error but if its been a while its most likely otherwise.
The second case is the one mentioned here. I do not speed shift and i lift the throttle fully when i do shift. I dont have cams so i dont shift at excessive engine speeds. I've never had any 'grinds' etc to indicate an oncoming issue.
There are no such things as constants here... each mechanical device built is subject to variance in assembly, reliability, performance... just like an engine would be. I hate subies... but i've driven those w/out any transmission woes like i do here. Even on high horsepower turbocharged Hondas.
Anyways, before i go any further... i'll wait until i hear from the dealer as to what exactly failed. Ill post what those parts are. If they wont cover it, i'm going to go w/ a Shep or TRE transmission and see how well those hold up. Also go w/ a better aftermarket clutch while im at it.

I suspect for one... the clutch disc or maybe the pressure plate may have had issues from the install. It would have engagement issues, regardless of how i adjusted the pedal. TRE advised that its possible it could have been stressed or bent if the installer hung the tranny on the input shaft. Something i would put passed the dealer... since they did forget to tighten my IC coupling at the t-body and also forgot to put all my door screws back (when fixing my window). I was actually going to bring the car in this wk anyways to have them check out the clutch until this happened sat night. Im curious as to why 4th gear is completely missing.... its weird. I'll post details of it later.
hmm weird I say call up shep or tre and call it a day. You wont have to worry about it again. The WRX 5 speed is the absolute worst transmission around but on the extreme other hand the 6 speed is amazing. It was designed in co-operation with porsche apparently and it is one of the best around. Guys who destroy those I give a high 5 too because its not exactly the easiest to break even with high hp (450+).
w/out any kind of performance rebuild? A shep or TRE trans? im talking about a bone stock Mistu tranny. I highly doubt it could handle multiple 500whp runs for 3 yrs. You mean a few runs w/ the car down for a year? adding up to 3 years? Seriously once a week for 3 yrs 500whp on stock trans? launching it etc? well.... if so... then you've got one sick trans.
maybe mine is weak. who knows.... and TRUST me.... i am just as skeptical as you guys in regards to WHY it broke. it surprised the hell out of me too.

well, the dealer and i went back/forth all week. They were glad to cover it the 1st time but not this time. Just a discount on the labor. So.... the car is sitting at the dealer (apart) and i'm going to ship the transmission myself to Shep Trans to get it rebuilt. Hopefully it will be stronger, but more importantly shift better. The clutch is being replaced w/ an ACT unit as i had suspected the disc from sticking to the persure plate or flywheel when engaged (no matter how much i adjusted the pedal) Because it eventually would not go into 1st gear at a stop w/ clutch fully depressed. I had to turn the motor off and it would slip right in. Anyways, im sure everything will be fine after this million dollar fix... u live u learn.
i have over 48k miles on same Tranny i havent broke or blew.. i always change 15k or 30k with AMSoil MT gear oil.. i race alot.. recently i blew Transfer case and tranny still fine.. i dump at 6500rpm lol.. mistake (forget slip)
Yeah, my 6 speed locked me out of 3rd gear. I just gave Shep one of my paychecks for a nice 5 speed. If you are racing / beating your 6 speed, i highly recommends that you save up a few thou for another transmission.
i am betting that they oppened your tranny at the dealer,,, and the work conducted not properly,,, the tight tolerances inside an evo tranny are not an easy task to work with if the tech doesn;t know what he was doing he could of easily messed something up,,,, the tolerances on these trannies are such that even working on them in a clean room is not overkiled.
hey i hope you can sort this out,,,, good luck,,,,,,,, you might need the tech that worked on my tranny down here in F.L the tranny is rock solid after some syncros and some gears replaced

to be honest w/ you i totally suspect the dealer tech for screwing it up. I think they rebuilt it 1/2 ***... and also installed the clutch improperly since it was obvious the disc still had friction against the flywheel or pressure plate when depressed. I hear a badly resurfaced flywheel or a bent disc can cause this. (u can bend parts from resting the tranny on the input shaft) And who knows how well they put it together? But anyways... they did ask why im having ShepTrans fix it... and i just gave them a dirty look and said, "because they are going to do it right!" but anyhoo... we'll see. Its being sent off already.
well if anyone's interested in an update...
First things first... John Shepherd is one cool guy! Took the time to explain etc. Nice guy. Anyways, so my output shaft was "twisted" going to the transfercase. and of course the 3-4 shift fork broke(again). But anyways after services rendered all rebuilt and i got the optional double synchro 5th. Cant wait to drive this thing again... The clutch and flywheel came in and the tranny is on its way back to the dealership from Sheptrans. Just waiting on my stainless clutch line and then for the dealer to put everything back. Hopefully i'll be back on the road shortly.
