I'm sorry you made your decision based upon the past, and not based upon the car at hand. I've had 13,000 trouble free miles on my Evo so far.
But I ask you this, if you had so little faith in Mitsu quality, and were obviously predisposed to not buying another Mitsu car because of it, why did you even bother test driving the Evo? Because even after driving it, and loving it, you still based your non-purchase decision on what you already knew...The Evo and it's performance had nothing to do with your decision.
Seems irrational to me. But hey, just my opinion.
So what are you going to purchase instead? Or are you going to just keep your 91 Eclipse?
SC~

I think its all in the owner. I have had mine for 5000 miles now and no problems whatsoever except for squeaky breaks when I drive it real hard which I realize now are just part of high perf brakes
. The car is too much fun imo. If you take care of your car and treat it right, then it will last. Take any other car not designed to be raced such as the evo is and put it through all the hell driving everyone on this board does and see how long it lasts.

Transmissions are more stronger in the Evo than they are in the Eclipses.
The engine isn't exactly the same motor as it is in the Eclipse, since the Evo's motor is mounted 180 degrees from what the Eclipse would be normally mounted at, plus different internals here and there.
But I haven't had any serious problems with mine though.

Meddlingkids why are you registered in this forum? If you hate Mitsu why read up on the EVO and put your .02 in? Mitsu is a great company. Just as good as any other out there. When you think of Mitsu's reliability you also have to consider some facts, the typical Mitsu buyer is alot younger than that of Toyota and Honda making them the most worked cars out there. Of course they are going to be broken more, they're driven harder.
Look at my car, it as alot more problems than it should, thats what happens when driven hard.

couple things to factor,
The eclipse was built on cross platform with chrysler lets not forget. It also shared many of the same componets as the sebring, avenger cars and most notibibly...was built in Normal, IL.
The EVO is built in Japan, Has an incredibly beefed up motor which revs much more feely than the 4g63 in the eclipse of old did. No crankwalk to deal with either. Not to mention its got a beefy transmission, cooling system, brakes, suspension.....things the old DSM's NEVER had stock.
I'm loving my EVO everyday more and more. I've had 11,500 trouble free miles so far. The only issue I've had is a creaking noise coming from the inside of the door. I spray some WD40 in a small opening...and its totally gone now.
I've owned a 98 eclipse gst prior to this and there is just NO comparison in quality between the 2. The eclipse by 10,000 miles had already developed major squeeks and rattles. Not to mention I already had about 6 un-scheduled dealer visits logged by that mileage for problems. It just felt like a sloppy car in general compared to the EVO. On hot humid days approaching 100 degrees, the stock cooling system wasn't even sufficient enough to keep the temps normal in the eclipse under boost.
I personally see the EVO, barring any major manufacturing bugs....being a reliable, well put together car for many years to come.
My 2 cents..

I registered because I really liked the way the EVO drove. I would hope the quality is above the Eclipse. I wouldn't say I hate Mitsubishi, but I'm going to do a fair bit of research before I'd buy one. That's why I'm here.

New 1992 Diamante that now has 181,000 miles on the clock. Little funky things but relatively trouble free.... Just drove it yesterday and it still works nicely...
Picked up my 1992 GVR4 with 1,600 miles on it. It now has about 178,000 again trouble free and still runs great...
Picked up my new 2003 Evo with 83 miles and I now have 5,500 and it runs fine. I had one warranty issue that was repaired.
I would reconsider. But I am a big Mitsu fan and you are not.
Your mileage may vary...
