Insurance - OUCH!

I just checked the insurance cost at State Farm for a 2003 EVO with the following coverages:

Liability: $250/$500/$100
100 Deductible Comp
500 Deductible Coll
Emer Roadside Serv
Uninsured MV 100/300
Uninsured MV Prop damage

I am 23 with nearly 7 years driving experience with no tickets or accidents yet. I live in a suburb of Sacramento, California. I have been with the same insurance company since my first day of driving. They quoted me $309 per month for the Evolution. This seems rather high, given what others are paying. Also, I checked with some online quotes and they were equally high.

Right, but when guys who are 19 living in NYC, with speeding tickets get lower rates than I am, something's up.

Damn , that's a lot of money!!! I know I couldn't afford an EVO with those insurance rates.

I wouldn't compare your rates to others. I use to live in CA and everything there is more expensive. Also, these 19 yr olds probably have their EVO's in their parents name and under their parents insurance policies. *hint*

Another option is to wait until your 25 or married, then you'll see a huge drop. At $300+/month, it doesn't seem worth owning an EVO (with another $500-600/month).

Yeah, I can't even afford a WRX, as it's nearly the same. I could afford the payments, but I'm not ready to pay that much to insure a car.

Mercury's quote was $150 per month. I wonder how they're so much cheaper than everybody else.

try living in philly, if I had an evo right now, I would have to live in it and pray to god I never get in any kind of accident... on a 92 bronco I had they quoted me 3k a year for insurance when I was 19.. even though I am 25, with only 1 ticket ever they were quotin me well over 300/month for an evo.. insurance is sickening in cities where people sue over the dumbest things... I gotta get out of the city!

That sh*t is nuts. Put all your deductibles at $500, Drop the road side crap, it comes with the car for 36 months. Dump uninsur MV prop damage. Don't need it. If it's not your daily driver, tell them it's for pleasure use only. If it is used everyday for work or school let them know the oneway milage. Also ensure they deduct for the ABS, SRS and engine emobilizer. Call every ins. company around to get a quote.
I was with state farm for 20 years. No more!! Now with USAA.
Good luck man.

Yeah, I have been for State Farm for 7 years. I think I'm going to switch to Mercury, given the $150 rate quoted for the Evo.

It is your age, I'll trade you 20 years for my rates anytine though. I go through State Farm and over time the discounts add up. Go with the cheap rate but remember that these cars depreciate rapidly and you will have to pay the diff if you ever get her totaled. Your lender will call your loan and you could be stuck for plenty if you did not get the gap coverage from the dealer when you bought your car.

How much is the gap coverage anyway? I calculated that, after three years, the value of the EVO would be about $18,144. Does this sound reasonable?

Well I pay $389.00 a month with Progressive. God, do not use Progressive. I am forced to because I am high risk and they are the only ones that will accept me. What a f&@#&$^ monopoly!

Best regards,

Mike

From a lease standpoint, the EVO should depreciate to half it's MSRP value after 4 years. So it should be worth $18750 after 3yrs. Now that I think about it, damn......

Don't go with State Farm. My family's been using State Farm for a long time, but they've been increasing their prices for the past few years. We finally decided to switch to AAA this year and we saved a lot of money.
