uneducated viii owners will tell you that upgraded cams in a ix arent really worth it, but thats only because whoever tuned their car doesnt know squat. do a search on here, and call around to a couple big evo tuning shops, and they will tell you that a mivec head can put down bigger numbers than a non mivec head.
Got a chip on our shoulder?

I don't know which is better, but I would assume Mitsubishi went to MIVEC for a reason with the IX. Good luck with your AutoX.

It depends on what racing you do. When I raced Hondas we used to eliminate vtec completely. If youre going to be in between 5000 rpm - 8000 mivec will be locked on the larger cam profile anyways. Mivec would help in autox though. Just my .o2.
I have an 05 RS that I drove 400 miles one way for. Good luck finding your car.

just recently i was reading on here and there was some guy who was like "its not even worth putting cams in the ix, you wont gain any power". that won the most uneducated statement of the week award in my book.

i would love to own an rs...

i really enjoyed driving the s2000. the transmission was fantastic. although i am pretty happy with the MR after some bushing upgrades. i test drove my friend's evo 8 5-speed and the throws seem longer.

anyway, evo 9s will make more power. just talk to a well known tuner. you are in PA, call Ivey.

I really don't think its worth adding cams to a stock turbo 9. I haven't really seen any proof that aftermarket cammed 9s are faster than stock cammed 9s on the stock turbo. Most nicely tuned nearly stock 9s run the same times as full bolt on 9s.

mivec is worth it unless your completely building the motor and running a big turbo...

but i doubt your doing that since it looks like your tight on money

actually thats almost true
you go with a smaller cam duration like 264, you wont see a lot of gain. maybe like 10whp. not worth it imo for 500 plus install and tune

but you go with a 274 or 272 duration you will see a pretty good increase in torque. it all on the owner if they think its worth it or not

The US RS's are red or white. There is some speculation as to how many of each were made in each year that the RS has been sold in the US.

That is excellent news. I look forward to seeing the results specifically trap speeds.

As an '03 VIII owner/STU driver, I would like to ask you:
Did you autoX the S2000? In what class?
How many autocross events have you done total, and in the MR?
How did you do compared to other STU cars?
Ever raced a car without ABS?

There are people racing MRs in STU and SM who are competitive.

On to the other questions, yes, there are benefits of a IX, and an RS, or at least an '05 but unless you are consistently placing .5 secs or less behind a good driver in an RS's autocross times, it really might not make that much of a difference.

Yes MIVEC makes a difference, especially at higher power levels, but this will not be a massive benefit to you in STU. MIVEC could provide an advantage in a class where you are not allowed to change cams, but once again, you're talking about something that would barely make a difference of a fraction of a second, in two identical Evos both driven by a robot.

Yes the bigger IX turbo makes a difference, but it's also probably neligble in STUmost/solo use.

Everyone thinks about turbos, MIVEC, and weight, but nobody has mentioned one of the biggest things for your situation, and that's the DIFFS. I wish I had an RS, or at least an '05<, not so much for the weight savings, or a 10.5 hotside, or MIVEC and I'd even rather have ABS, but because in STU you can't install a LSD in place of an open diff. So an RS has an open diff, but that should rule out a non-FLSD equipped VIII.

Sure, if you want the most race-ready, non-ABS, lightest Evo, an RS is not a bad idea. If I cared and were fast enough for it to matter, my ideal STU Evo would be a IX RS. Just keep in mind that you're talking about switching cars based on less than 7 runs, of less than 60-sec. laps, and for how many events per year? The bottom line is, an MR is a much nicer car to drive around the other 99% of the time. Unless you are really an experienced hotshoe driver with your sights set on competing natioanlly,, you'd be surprised how little <150 lbs matters compared to the driver.
