4g63 ??
I really don't think you can compare the 4G63 from even 10 years ago to the one around now. Don't forget, there was a time when the 4G63 was notorious for crankwalk, hardly a characteristic of a great engine.
The ones that suffered from crankwalk were built primarily between 1994-1997. They didn't seem to get it right again untill the Evolution V or so.
A great example of how things don't nessisarily "evolve" into somthing better, and it all can be a hit or miss.
Yes but that alone means you can't exactly go "the 4G63 has been around for 10 years, therefore it's the best motor out there". Yes it's been around a long time but it's had some problems along the way. There's no denying the fact that it's a great motor but I don't think it's the best.
What are you trying to tell us.
i personally think the 4G63 is a great engine.
The real matter is how you take care of it.
You cant have a best desingned engine and blow it every 2 miles.
4G63 is a good engine with long history. Both bad and good.

The 4G63 first appeared in SOHC form in Starions and Tredias in 82-83. The engine family that the 4G63 belongs to, the Sirius engine family, has been in production since the 1970's.
Ambystom01, I am not implying that the 4G63 engine is the BEST engine ever made. It is, however, one of the best four cylinder engines ever made in terms of strength, and aftermarket support.

Not sure if it received any awards magazine-wise, but the 4G63 is the fastest 4-cylinder in the WORLD (1/4 mile race) in both rwd & awd configuration.

care more about real accomplishments rather than a subjective magazine award, you can tell your buddy that LOL
I really don't think you can address this question based on extremes like that. Hell, the Ecotec motor in the Cobalt is renowned for it's ability to hold power but it's not the best out there in average trim.

I think that there is too many sub-categories in the "best" topic.
Do we mean performance? Fuel mileage? Reliability? Tuneability?
Stock for stock?
I personally have beat Honda motors, with little trouble.
I havent pushed my 4g because I love too much to pop it, so basically I havent risked it. Thank God this isnt who has the "best" transfer case lol!
Ive had stock GSR (Honda) heads flow close to 300 cfm( on a superflow600 flow bench), which is incredible. I would have to say that the Honda cylinder head is superior to about anything else, but stock for stock, their bottom ends do not hold up strongly to high output for very long.
I agree with the 4g63 as a shot gun comment. Less finesse more brute strength
