Car horn is possessed

I was stuck in traffic literally at a stand still for 30 minutes. There was an accident up ahead on the highway.

The car was running and the AC was on. Then suddenly the horn starts honking at a steady state. I thought maybe the horn was stuck so I hit the wheel a couple of times and nothing. I shut the car off and it was still honking.

Opened the hood looked for anything unusual. Saw nothing out of the ordinary except there was a weird smell. I had no choice but to pull the fuse for the horn after my ears were bleeding!

Does anyone have a similar experience and what was the fix?

Horn relay is likely the problem, otherwise it can be faulty wiring or the switch. I have wiring diagrams at my work, but horn circuits usualy are generaly the same for jap cars. Usualy The switch in the steering wheel grounds a pin on the relay which is fed 12V + from that fuse you pulled. When you send the ground signal to the relay by pushing the switch, the relay routes 12v+ to the NO pin which goes to the horns, The horns are constantly fed ground. So if the relay somehow faulted the horns can get stuck on. Or if the wire that buses the ground signal from the switch is shorted to ground they will stay on. Those are the too most likely problems. Also if the wire that goes to the horns from the relay is shorted to 12v+ they will stay on. But there are more places that a wire can short to Ground than B+. So start with the relay and then check to see if the the wire between the switch and the relay has ground continuously, if so check the switch and the wire. That might be difficult.

3Sqteguru, thanks for the advise. Most of this electrical stuff you said is over my head but I can definitely check the relay. Any idea where the relay might be located?

I pray it is the relay because I dread the idea of pulling the airbag and the wheel off and start probing in there.

This happened to my wife's ford escort zx2. The switch in her steering wheel is bad and they quoted $500 to fix. Now there is more yelling and more middle finger flying, but less honking.

That happened in my integra. Look around your steering column and make sure there isn't a short making a connection (for instance, the metal ring that held the steering column cover around my teg had popped off and touched the horn connection). Good luck!

IDK off the top of my head, its probaly in or near the front engine room fuse box. Check the lid. There is that Relay box next to the fuse box too look there also. You might be able for testing purposes to switch the relay with another one in the box if both relays are EXACTLY the same, read to see if they have numbers and if the numbers are the same.
