I also think that you need both.

I'ts hard (at least around me in NY) to be able to do repetitive 4th and 5th gear pulls on the streets and IMO they are as important as the common 3rd gear pull because they show loads/temps and sometime knocks that are different than the usual. That is the main reason I think, along with the fact that you see instant power changes, a dyno is important.

The street is then needed to tune for low load driveability, smoothness, and get rid of partial and on/off throttle knocks etc.

actually it was 50 a few years ago...being there's only one of me I couldn't possibly keep up with the demand for 30 + tunes a month because I don't do quick and dirty canned tunes like some of the others. Each one is customized to fit the mods/boost/octane and that takes time to get it perfect. So these days I do far fewer tunes and that allows me to spend more time on each and have fast response times.

For mail in tunes you can't beat Chris @ Mellon's for sure!!! The tunes are great for making power and overall driveability. But in that same breath if you really want to know what your car is putting down to the street at the wheels and if you are trully getting the most out of the cash you're droping on Mods you gotta go to the dyno. Especially if E-85 or C16 are in you plans to make more power (But I wouldn't go down that road without a good WB-02 sensor) .
