Octane, a way around it?
Octane, a way around it?
I've thought about just about everything when it comes to owning a EVO. One of them is having to buy premium gas again. The price for premium around here is now on the heels of $1.80 per gallon, usually 20cents per gallon more than regular unleaded. (We do have 93 octane gas here).
My idea is this, why not buy 14 gallons of regular gas, $2.80 per tank cheaper than premium, and use an off-the-shelf octane booster? I've never used one before, but the idea sounds like it work, and provide higher octane
Just a thought
I'm sure some of you more technically oriented people out there know why this will or will not work

Octane booster will only raise your octane a few points. I.e 93 -> 93.3 for example. There is only so much that tiny bottle can do when its diluted by 14 gallons of gas! Buy the premium.
- you are driving the wrong car if $3 per tank extra is so much of a concern!

$1.80 per gallon for premium gas. That's cheap compare to a lot of area.
BTW, how much is the octane booster cost? I'll bet it cost more than $2.80. So you will end up spending more to knock your octane rate higher.

also the octane boosters will make like a rusty color build up on your spark plugs. at least the old boosters did this i dunno if the new ones do. they can aslo destroy you cat too.

If I'm even considering spending 30k on a car that has the practicality of Bigfoot, then that should tell you I'm driving the right car!
Why not spend the extra money for safety. I really think that 20 cents more for a gallon isn't something that should be hitting your pocket. Imagine this, if you were to buy a car worth 17 but you can get it fully loaded for 18 which one would you get?
In the end those 20cents/gallon will eventually save your ars because of its protective qualities.

If you are worrying about spending an extra 10-25cents on gas per gallon, the Evo is probably not the car for you.
If you are worried about the extra 20 cents per gallon, how can you rationalize having to buy 2 sets of tires per year? That's an additional $750-1000 upkeep cost each year!
How can you rationalize having to spend $3.00 per quart on synthetic oil (required in the Evo) when regular oil costs $1.00 per quart? If you drive 12k miles per year, thats an additional $50 per year if you do 4 oil changes.
How can you rationalize the extra cost for car insurance over the normal average car? The average insurance on a car in the area is $800...the Evo costs me $1300. Thats an additional $500!
How can you rationalize the unwanted attention these cars garner from the local police? It's already earned me a ticket in this state!
The Evo is costing me an additonal appx $1700 per year, over a non-enthusiast normal boring car. and thats NOT including the extra fuel costs! Worth every cent to me! But to a skin flint, these are all un needed extra costs.
But most enthusiasts don't really worry about the additional costs too much. They understand that there is a price for the excellent handling and slingshot performance. 'you gotta pay to play' would be a good but worn saying that applies here.
The Evo is not a car for penny pinchers!

I don't want to sound uppity but Sunoco sells 100 octane in the mid-atlantic at some of there stations and you can order 105 and 115 octane from the dealers here. I think it is $3.89 a gallon. (The real irony is that my dealer has not changed his pricing since May.
Here is the link to there gas specs.
http://www.racegas.com/fuelspecs/default.asp
There 100 and 105 are unleaded and the 115 has lead.
You can also use the link to find local stations with 100 race gas.

Guess I'm stupid or getting addicted - been payin $5.95/gal. for 104 unleaded and running on the street with my Stage I (Vishnu) setup with the Exede switched "on" to use the ~370 hp map rather than ~340 hp with the Exede switched off for our California 91 Octane gas. That extra HP is pretty fun - I'm on my 3rd tank! Gotta get off this stuff...
