EVO Gods pls advise

Just ditched My WRX (stolen) and in the process of getting an evo but I need some info.

What is breakin procedure?
Are people running syn. trans and gear oil? with what affects?
are there major power diffs between reflashes?
who has them besides Vishnu and works?
What mods would you make first?
does any one sell cheap wheels i could use for the winter?
What is the most comon complaint? (with wrx it was tires)

I can maybe help you with someof this

1) I did the normal 1000 mile break in, keeping revs low and staying out of boost. I don't recall what the dealer told me for sure, I think it was for a 600 mile break in though...

2) I'm not

3) the Works reflash can add 25-30 hp and will improve your mileage as well. I believe the Vishnu product (not a reflash, it's a piggyback) will do something similar.

4) Vishnu doesn't have a reflash yet.

5) Works reflash, an axle back, and a K&N.

6) cheap wheels that fit without adaptors are not that common. They are around though.

7) F&F types complain about the clutch wearing out too soon, others report no problems with it - I have 11,000 miles and no probs. The tranny can make crunching noises in 2nd and 5th, especially when cold - this improves with the miles. Tires seem good to me, I have 11,000 miles on mine and with the rotations they should last a good bit longer, maybe 20,000 if I behave. I don't really have a complaint myself, I do wish it had a bigger gas tank for road trips, and I wish the stereo was of higher quality - but I say those two things about pretty much every car I've ever bought!! I'm very very happy with the purchase. The seats are tight if you are overweight, but are AMAZINGLY comfortable on long trips!

I would easily buy an EVO again if this one got stolen or totalled.

Go to the Evo tech boards and just dig and dig. You will actually find a lot more than just what you are asking. I sometimes spend hours here just learning new things and reading people's trial and error experiences. For the most part, follow the dealer's break-in, don't worry about synthetics except for sticking with Mobil 1. All the mods you listed work, and everyone will have opinions about different brands or manufacturers. Once you figure out what you want to do (ie downpipe, exhaust, etc) research and talk to people who actually own the parts, not the wanna-bes. You will get a good idea of what's out there. Winter wheels should be available at Tire Rack by now. Good luck!

you can break it in the panzy *** mitsu way, or you can break it in for real, make your engine perform better and last longer

heavy load, change the oil right away to non synthetic (change the oil at 20 miles to get rid of all the metal suspended in it) petro based stuff

take it out for 200 miles, run from 2nd to red line and let it the engine decel from 7500 to 4000 then do the same in 3rd and 4th (4th at redline is 110 in my car, so becarful where you are, i sugjest a track, but do this on the way to the track as well) and do it in 5th if you can, but thats hard.. go to damn fast

your rings will seat VERY well and you'll gain about 5 hp over a engine not broke in properly, plus the engine will last longer too

change the oil again at 1000 miles and switch back to synthetic moble 1 (and get better trannie fluid too)

GOOD LUCK

EDIT: btw, if your a n00b to turbo cars.. DONT GET INTO BOOST WITH OUT WARMING UP THE ENGINE FIRST! thats where most your damage comes from.. take it easy till your eng temp is near normal, then you can get on it

that will extend the life of your car as well

and if you run it hard for awhile dont just go some where and park/shut it off, let it idle a bit so the turbo can cool down

This sounds resonable, but do you have some sort of proof or reasoning as to why this is the correct method for break-in?

I am, actually. Don't want to sound doubtful of your knowledge, but I'm about to sink some hard earned (and potential earnings!) into one of these, I want to treat it right.

ztargetz, I agree. I have the link. I will find the article, and everyone can eat their words. Mind you, I have a motorcycle that threw down 183.6 horsepower compared to others putting down 5-8 horses less. 200 miles, pound the ***** like you stole it.
Here it is, and no, just because he is referring to motorcycles does not mean a thing. The idea is the same, and his theories and results are all proven and consitent. Amongst many engine builders, all have agreed this is a viable way to do things. Eventually the motor will go through some sort of strain (after 1K miles of babying it, wail on it), so you may as well get it right the first time. Here is the link, read on:

I agree with this method, has worked great for me over the years. I just wish he would redo the web page so it doesnt like some sort of marketing bull****. Presentation of information on the internet has as much importance at swaying Plebes as the information itself.
