The Evo 8 & 9 - not too good in a side impact. The X is better - more steel, more air bags and a bunch more weight.

Actually you will not be good. Unless you are planning on wearing a helmet at all times, your skull could crack open when it hits the solid metal bar. And yes, even if in a harness, the belts will stretch, your body will move, the seat will bend enough to have your head hit a part of the cage.

All the cloth, plastic & other stuff found on the A,B,C pillars and ceiling does have a purpose to protect your head. Install a bare metal bars around your head and you could possibly end up with a major head injury but maybe fewer internal injuries....

And before you ask, those foam covers you can get for the bars will do very little for you. The only ones that would help some are the expensive dense looking ones - that very few weekend warrior seem to buy for their cars.

Anyway, something to think about....

No problem and yes he was very lucky....My friend had a ix blacked out one night going around a corner about 110mph he only had the car for a week still had the temp tag on the car. After rolling the car twice it had thrown him threw some trees car was mangled. wish i had pics to show but he was also lucky. IMO evos are safe, crash test ratings and all that other bs dont define real life incidents anything is possibly!!

i got into an accident last night where i hit a 06 nissan pathfinder....the front bumper of the pathfinder was ****ED the hell up...and only my right fender was messed up along with half the passenger side headlight....oh my passenger side sideskirts came off lol. i was going 35-40 mph and the pathfinder was coming from a sidestreet at maybe 10 mph (or so she says)... i accidentally ran the red light cuz im an idiot who was looking at the dash to turn on the defogger and when i looked up it was too late.

but for my car to take less damage than an SUV...geez...the quality of cars nowadays sucks i dont even think crash ratings really matter. its just a false sense of security imo

dam man sorry to hear about that. But cars nowadays are all about safety and that crumple zone crap. Any impact and the car is meant to crumple to absorb the impact. I am a believer of this because when I had my first accident I was in a suv and I couldn't stop in time hit another car pretty dam hard. The front end of my car crumpled and absorbed most of the impact I barely felt anything.

I'm curious why you are asking for "real world" stories, when you know that the car has been tested (under scientific conditions) to perform poorly in side impacts?

What are you looking to do with the car? Volvo's S60R and S40 T5 are very nice cars and car give the EVO a run for the money. But they are far safer (and comfortable) with children.

I asked the question because I'm skeptical of "impartial" tests. I remember years ago watching a 60 Minutes segment where the Consumer Reports testers cheered when they were able to finally get an Isuzu Trooper to nearly tip over after many attempts in an avoidance maneuver test. So this forum seems like the best place to ask how the car performs from people who actually own the car.

I desire an Evo for the same reason a lot of owners do: the visceral driving experience and the ability to carry more than one passenger. I've driven many vehicles through the years and nothing I've found that can come close to an 8 or 9 for that and still be practical. Unfortunately to me, that includes the Evo X. Plus I've got a Honda Odyssey as a family car. Front wheel drive "performance cars" just don't do it for me either.

I understand that the vehicles collision performance is not the primary concern of most Evo and other performance car owners and it's never been for me until I got some real family responsibilities. I'm just suspicious of any kind of government report and would rather hear how the vehicle performs from actual owners. Heck, they rate a 3 series extremely poor in the same type test.

Perhaps I'm making too big a deal over this and should just shut up and get the car I've been lusting after for 5 years. Thanks for the tips on the Volvos, I wasn't aware they made any vehicles that were comparable to an Evo's performance. Guess I'll head over to the Volvo forum and ask about dyno runs!

every accident is different, there is no way to actually put a "star" rating on any car. They are bull**** rating to sell cars. Sure some cars are built stronger then others, but it doesn't mean that you are necessarily going to be safer. If you wanna play it safe...cage, cage padding, racing suit, all FIA approved stuff, seats, helmet, harness...

also, remember, the strength and integrity of the collision is not what will kill you. you can get hit by a car at 5mph, but if the steel beam that car is carrying on the roof goes flying through your windshield or drivers window and hits you in the head the force of the beam times its weight and velocity will kill you.

so true...its not the accident itself usually its the effects of it like a beam going at ur face lol...but anything is possible nowadays just watch out for yourself and be more alert...im speaking for experience lol read my earlier reply T_T

the cage will hurt you more if you are driving on the street and crash.

The driving experience of a evo will win out over crash test rating in my book. Everybody's gotta go sometime. Might as well have fun while it lasts. The evo is an insanely fun car to drive and that by itself won me over. Just being careful and attentive is the best way to prevent accidents. 5-star crash ratings don't mean anything if you are doing something stupid or not paying attention. NO CELL PHONES WHEN DRIVING. Call them back! I have seen so many accidents because of cell phones Anyway, buy an evo because it's an evo.

The most horrific crash I've ever heard of locally a few miles from my house was an EVO owner, racing in rush hour traffic, lost control and basically cut the car in half, killed him instantly, and his girlfriend died 7 days later. Kind of scared me away from getting an EVO for a while, but I ended up getting one anyway.

And you can say well what do you expect when you're racing in rush hour, true...but the point is that he wrecked on the highway, at highway speeds, and there wasn't anything left of the car, and no matter how good of a driver you are, things can always happen beyond your control, even if you're not doing anything stupid.

So I'd get an EVO if I were you, but I'd keep the kids out of it.
