So this forum seems like the best place to ask how the car performs from people who actually own the car.
FYI: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is not an agency or department of the government. If you have a safe family car for the kiddies, then just buy an Evo already!

FWIW, they rated the REAR passenger survivability much better.

Head/neck- Good
Torso- Good
Pelvis/Leg- Good
Head protection- Marginal

So slap a helmet on Jr and strap him in the backseat and have a blast.

I will tell you first hand the evo held up great in a rear and side impact crash. I was struck at around 50mph on I95 by a Semi truck and then spun around the highway and slammed backward into a jersey barrier at about 40. The car was totalled but I emerged without a scratch, honestly I feel really lucky coming out of it with nothing more than a slightly sore neck but after that incident I feel 100% safe. Hope that helps out a little.

Some pics of the wreck.....

I have a friend that is just unlucky or cursed with Evos I guess and has had the 2 evos that he has owned totaled... nether of which where his fault one head on with a center median on the freeway (another car pushed his into it at 60mph) He walked away with bumps and bruises just sore the new few days but fine. and the other was getting t-boned in a intersection (he was doing 40 mph other car over 50 mph running a red light) that one he was the same bumps bruises and sore for a few days.. He loves the Evo still because the car has saved his life twice and is a awesome car. but since the only two accident in his life involved totaling both his Evos he opted to by something else with his money and got a Mercedes S55 AMG O well but I say that Evos are Safe

Thanks so much, LancerMRguy. Your shared experience is much appreciated.
I imagine it brought back some painful memories. Thanks everyone else as well.
In this age of distracted drivers, you really got to be on your guard.

So true, and that, IMO, is why the Evo is a GREAT car to have. Safety testing involves the "what if" scenerio of accidents happening. Real life involves that too, but there's no absolute guarentee that you're going to get hit and avoiding an accident in an Evo is (I know from experience) much easier than many many other cars. Hell, I avoided plenty of collisions with a particular S2000 at track speeds on track when it would spin out etc... (My dad and I used to co-own an S2k, he raced it usually, and I raced my Evo).

So yeah, low crash test performance ratings, but as you've seen and heard hear, people are surviving. I've driven an S60R and a S40 T5 AWD, neither of them could brake as fast, swerve as fast, or accelerate as fast as a stock Evo. With how horrible drivers are here in Utah, I can tell you that a little bit of skill and my car/s abilities have saved my life plenty of times.

So: Buy the Evo you want, do some Auto-x and track days in it, get a feel of driving it near it's limits so that, if you ever have to, you know exactly how to react when you need those limits on the street. No matter what you do, you can't reduce the idiots on the road, but you can reduce the likelyhood of getting hit. Like I told a friend who asked me "How'd you get hit? I thought you were a good driver" when I got hit about a month back. My answer: "I was stopped." I got backed into from the side while I was stopped at a light. Nothing I could've done there.

that's great news that you are ok, but it doesn't look like you were struck directly in the side and it wasn't on your side either... the Evo Viii's and IX's don't have good side safety ratings for side impacts... not the lancers at least and we don't have side air bags.

I hate to say it but the bigger the vehicle the better, large suv's and full size trucks protect people very well from accidents. Also the safty features of the x was one of the main reasons I bought it (2 year old son). Side airbags, driver knee airbag, and curtain airbags for all four doors are nice features.
