Modded EVO or new S4
I did get the TT back, and the total cost was around 15K for everything. The TT has ben my first turbocharged car, and I love it. I am definatly hooked on the turbo and the ease of tuning them. AS for the Vr6 TT, I think thise engines are terrible. they are not tunable, and they don't put out as much power as the 1.8 does in my car in its current state of tune. they are also a lot more expensive. If they were turbocharged, then it wuld be another story, but as it is, they are not.
Quote from the British magazine Autocar (August 26, 2003) regarding the S4:
"the Audi is spoiled by an intrusive stability control system that ruins turn-in accuracy and feel, to accentuate the steering's artificiality. The front end pushes wide, washing out under power, while the chassis lacks adjustability."
That being said, the Audi is a great looking car and a lot less conspicuous than the Evo: Spell less points on your license.

FYI, i have traded my Porsche for my Evo.
The Evo is a true driver's car. Depends on what you are looking for.
IMO, the EVO is a one of a kind!

i hope it was a boxster that you traded in... because the Evo might be a driver's car, but it's still doesn't have the refinement of a porsche... I know the Evo is faster, but if i could afford it, i would own any version of the carrera possible..

Hey,
Funny, I sold my Porsche 1987 911 Cabriolet and traded my modded A4 1.8T Quattro for my EVO.
My Dad (who handed down the 911 to me) actually has a C4s, the very model compared in the SCC article, hehe. I took him for a ride tonight and I think he was pretty surprised.
I was very close to getting a 2.7T S4 and getting chip and exhaust. The S4s don't hold their value that great. I would have gotten a chip, dps, and cat back exhaust. This would be a few grand, but you would have a lot of power and mad torque. Handling is waaaay down, but refinement, comfort, luxury, fit and finish would be much higher.
I kind of got scared away since the turbos may go (somewhat common, esp when modded), and it would be spendy to replace two turbos. At that point, you would probably upgrade to K04s. Oh, and you may have to upgrade the clutch as well. Also need two diverter valves, gotta keep an eye on the vac lines, might need to replace the ignition coils etc. etc.
I dealt with several of the bugs in my Audi A4 (bad ign coil, bad maf, bad wheel bearingS), so I was familiar with them, and stepping upto the S4 would raise the stakes even higher on top of shelling out ~30K for the car. Notice, I didn't even mention upgrading the susp, heavy *** wheels, or the brakes.
Conversely, the EVO is fun outta the box, and with short money you can raise the perf significantly. Still, sometimes I think it would be nice to have gotten the S4, but I'm happy.
Good lucK!

I owned two different S4 sedans, one an 00, the other an 01. Both were mildly modded with Ecu(MTM on one/ABT the other), Milltek exhaust and Forge diverter valves.
Both were excellent cars that were well-equipped, beautifully trimmed, and ultra-fast on the top end (saw 164 in my 01). Neither were actually much fun to drive to be honest, and road feel and performance at lowers speeds seemed disconnected and numb. Weight bias with the heavy 6cy engine hanging in front of the front axle didn't help things either and the car really felt clumsy especially now comparing to the Evo's level of agility.
Looking back I don't regret selling either car(s4) to be honest, and don't know why I bought a second one thinking it would be better the second time around....it wasn't.
Btw- I know your post is about the new S4 v8. Although not as tuneable as the 2.7 tt S4, the V8 is a nice package, and from what I have read is better in the road feel department than the bi-turbo cars. Just reading the recent S4/EVO/M3/911 article reminded me of the S4's bias, and confirmed its inability to hang with the others through hard driving manuevers.
Even having read that article a while back, I was out on the S4 forum recently drooling over a new S4 Avant. Wow!!! What a sweet looking car!! I am drawn like a moth to the flame when it comes to cool cars, and the new S4 is definitely that. I found myself thinking wow...maybe...no, no way..well maybe???!!
Then I realized that the dillemma is being honest with yourself when it comes to vehicles. The new S4 is another fine example of Audi luxury with nice performance overtones. Luxury, speed, prestige, the Audi makes you feel special, kind of like wearing a nice suit, strapping on your rolex, and slipping on a pair of italian leather slip-ons....untouchable in its own right.
Although I understand that need very well, I also have this uncontrollable desire to own an uncompromising hard-edged performance car that represent the sharp edge of handling, acceleration and braking performance all wrapped into one perfect dynamic in-your face package. The Evo is that car for me, and the Audi S4 is not.
I guess sometimes you just can't have your cake and eat it too, and for me I have found that coming to grips with whats most important in a car is not an easy thing. For me its the hard-core edgy performance!
Good luck deciding for yourself...only you can know for sure!

Great post N1OS, I totally agree. Were you on Audiworld?
I had the Milltek and Bailey on my A4, great stuff. I apologize since I thought the original post was about the 2.7T, not the new V8.
I had the exact dilemma with performance vs a "nice" car, and at my current budget I can't get the level of perf I crave with prestige, refinement, and luxury. I think a 911 TT would fit the bill, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
Take care,
