Question winter beater or not?... that is the question

ok, here is the situation:

I currently have a 93 Accord that I was going to sell and have it fund some of my mods to EVO (volk rims, exhaust... the whole deal). BUT now I am considering keeping it for my winter car. The catch is that I don't have a place to store my EVO during the winter (w/o paying for it).

The choices:

1. sell my accord and get winter tires for the EVO and then in spring get mo' stuff with the money I got from selling the accord
2. keep the accord as a winter beater and keep the EVO outside during the winter (with a cover).

ahhh.... what'd ya'll think?

Keep the accord for winter.

How much do you think a 93 accord worth in the market? I'll bet you can't get more than 3k.

Save money over the winter and start your mods on next spring. This will give you a lot of time for research and map out your upgrade path.

Good luck.

is it safe to store the EVO outside with a cover on it all winter?

also, I could easily get $3500 for my accord

thanks!

I am seriously thinking about a winter beater too as the evo is my daily driver.....if you can, rent a gagrage or something or even pay a friend who has a garage to keep it for the winter..and use the accord in the winter

yes, that is what I did and I don't have any or no anyone that has garage space available, so the question is still.... would it be ok to keep the EVO outside in the winter with a cover?

It would be OK as long as it isn't parked on the side of the road (away from snowplow salt). I could get a beater also, but I would miss my EVO . Also, my wife would be pissed about a $500+ car payment with a car sitting in the garage.

My advice, sell the accord. Put some all seasons/winters on the stock EVO rims. Use the AWD . Use the remaining cash for mods.

Listen to kdogg.

It's stupid as hell to have a car you only drive 1/2 the year, especially if you're making payments! I am looking forward to abusing this winter season with snows/awd. It will be excellent, plus it gives you a chance to try out some low-speed 4-wheel drifting!

If you're worried about salt/etc. you need to assess something: 1) can you hit the local DIY carwash up to once a day? If so, continue... 2) will you be keeping the car < 8 years? If so, you're good to go!

I have just NEVER understood the concept of a winter beater substitute for any car that is driveable during the winter. Obviously that excludes cars like the S2k, NSX, etc.

well put, and coming from a guy that has worse winters then we do in Albany, I value your opinion.

but, I'm still unsure on what I want to do. I'm leaning towards selling my accord and getting some winter tires for the EVO. What do you guys think about getting the black ralliart mudflaps for the winter season, good idea?

GranMassaX, thanks. They sure are hell here, god forbid I should have to drive to Buffalo though.

I went 2 winters in my 330 and 1 in my Civic and never had a problem. It does require some extra maintenance (be SURE to get a solid coat of wax (or 3!) before winter rolls around, or befriend a dealership where you can take your car and wash it in a heated garage). In the end it's worth it IMO! Good luck with whatever you choose of course.

BTW I bought Dunlop Winter Sport M3's from tirerack for $145/each and will mount them on the stock wheels. I plan on getting summer wheels and mounting either the advans or (hopefully) going to 245/40/17 tires in the spring, thus keeping the stockers for winter use. I haven't totally decided on that plan as being final yet though...

I live on an unplowed dead end street in Buffalo, New York, and I cant wait till the snow starts to fall !!!!

Winter tire package, lots of wax, and stay away from the DIY car washes, spend the extra $1.00 or $2.00 to stay inside your car where its warm and dry.

There are a few Mobile stations around here that have drive in automated single bay car washes, with an undercarriage spray, to get at all the salt and dirt you cant get with the DIY sprayers.

Or sometimes I will go all out and get a Super Kiss.

I also keep a chamois in the trunk to dry my car completely after a wash. Nothing like waking up in the morning to frozen shut doors.

Keep your rubber floor mats clean, cause the salt from your shoes will rust the floor pans out from the inside, and ruin your carpets.

I expect there to be a tiny bit more rust on my cars than if I kept it garaged all winter. Its just the way it is here in Buffalo.

Also if you decide to store it. Dont tempt yourself with a ride on a nice day thinking you'll be able to clean it up like it never happened. No matter how hard you clean, you'll get enough salt on it to cause as much or more damage over time, to the underside of your car as if you drove it all winter.

Personally I cant wait for the drifting to begin!!!

My only concern is ground clearance, but not enough to loose sleep.

I agree about the driving it in the winter, because afterall, you are making payments on it and should drive it. Plus, what fun are we going to have with this thing? A 300hp freakin sportscar that's awd. God it's going to be fun.

I'm also lucky enough to work at a dealership and can use the heated garage and heated water to wash my car, almost daily if need be.

I don't know about the mudflaps, because I think you need to drill into the sheetmetal to mount them, and I don't want to do that. Plus, Ralliart anything is very expensive.

Now I just gotta get my winter tires yet.

My EVO will be in for the winter. My daily driver will take on the snow. Maybe in a year or two, I'll change my mind. Especially, I move to place further from my workplace.
