Reliability issues?
OK, I am pumped up about both the STi and the Evo coming..now its a matter of which one offer what and for what price AND...how reliable is each one.
If the Evo is of the same Diamond Star Motor Talon/eclipse, etc then forget it...but if the rumor of it being a completely different type of car and quality then I am very interested.
Anyone hear any reliability issues with the new Evos??

Whats wrong with the DSM vehicles? The DSM's and Evo's practically share the same motor and drivetrain parts. Of course, the Evo 7 is more advanced but, they both need more than average TLC.

well, the eclipse wasn't that great of a car, especially the 2G. I'm surpised, CuGSX, if you own a 95 GSX, then you should know all about the Crankwalk issues that almost all 2G Turbo suffers from, unless your GSX is an auto. The eclipse's 4G63 has not being used since EvoIII, since then the motor went through some pretty big changes(kinda like the B16 series motor from Honda, it was improved over the year but still called B16). Also, the AWD drivetrain from Eclipse GSX is off from Galant VR4, not Evo. Finally, Eclipse was a joint venture by Mitsubishi and GM and the 4G63 was machined and built in the U.S. so the built quality suffered. I like Eclipse, I drive a 95 GSX as well, but right now, its parked in the dealer waiting for engine swap because the crankshaft walked and a rod went though the block. DSM cars are great, they run fast and looks sexy, but the quality sucked. As far as I'm concerned, Evo is a supeior car compare to the Eclipse.
im sure the evo will not have any crankwalk issues...but if for some reason it still does...may mitsubishi be hit by a giant tidal wave or something...but i thinkt he subaru will be better build quality and reliability overall

RaX, I believe they put Japan or US or whatever if a certain percentage of the parts and labor were done in that country. For example, if the engine was primarily from Japan and worked/assembled in Japan then its gets a J, and vice versa.
CuGSX,
From what I have seen the DSM just seem to "not work." I dunno how to explain it, but all of a sudden parts just fail.
Actuall, another few questions, does anybody know if the current Eclipse, Montero, Galant are DSM cars or built in Japan strictly by Mitsu motors? I've only driven the Galant, but from my experience with the Galant and Consumer Reports (unbiased testing and statistics from past repairs/problems) the cars are below average reliability...
Yeah, Daimler Chrysler, thats what I meant to say, sorry. As for the Engines, 1G DSM motors were 100% made in Japan and the rest of the car is assembled in U.S. 2G DSM motor parts were made in japan and assembled in U.S.

there is no more DSM cars being made now, Chrysler close down the factory. or Mitsubishi took over it. Any how if you open your drive side door or open the hood. if you see the tage there it is. funny thing is if you look in a Chrysler car you might see a mitsuibshi tage on it.
Well, if DSM cars are no longer being produced then what is up with the Mitsu reliability of the latest cars?!
I joined consumer reports to take a look at cars. Consumer reports takes independant testing of vehicles they have bought and run reports. Additionally for relibility they run off history of each vehicle and see how each one has done, how many times it has been in the shop, and what for. Its unbiased good info for us, the consumer and all of the current US mitsu cars are not too hot! Basically all of their cars are BELOW AVERAGE!!! That sucks b/c their pricing is good and with the Evo7/8 coming they should have some good products!!

I think we can assume that the U.S. Evo will be similar to the U.S. Lancer in terms of reliability (as long as they are built in the same country). We just have to wait for the reliability history of the U.S. Lancers because they are so new.
How's everyones Lancers holding up here? How long have you had it, and how many miles? What type of driving do you do...city or hwy?

YY,
Sorry to read that you have CW. I however, never had any problems with my GSX. I did have to replace the rear O2 sensor and a coolant line but, thats it.
I wouldn't base my next car purchase decision on the CW issue though. The Evo 7 does come with a 4G63 engine. It has upgraded components but, from what I've heard they too suffer from CW on occassion. Very few though. That also goes the same for the 1G too.
To those who think that the Evo is some perfect vehicle that gives goobs of power and needs very little maintenance should not buy an Evo. You should go out and buy a Honda instead.

CuGSX,
Right, I understand about owning a car that is not going to be perfect, but in a world of limited funds and time I don't want a car that falls apart on me either. I think the Evo is a GREAT, GREAT car, but I would like a car that can do the things I would like it to w/o having to be in the shop a lot. If I wanted that I would look at getting a Viper or Ferrari!
I guess if I wanted a car to have VERY good reliability I would get a LExus or Honda, but you're right I want a car that is straight mean...but for $30K I want that meaness to last a little longer than say 50K miles and/or 5 years (just pulling numbers out of thin air).

Here's my 2 cents:
First: Soleman20, what does the reliability of the crappy U.S. lancer have to do with a car that is based off a mirage (evo). The cars are very different from bumper to bumper?
Second: I'm still a pretty amature mechanic and only know basic maintenance like oil, coolent, fluids, spark plugs and small stuff. So when CuGSX says it needs more then very little maintenance what exactly are we talking about and how often?
Third: What exactly is the Crank walk issue (CW)? I know what a crankshaft is, what does it mean when it walks? Also, how much is it to fix if it happens?
And thats my two cents

Guack007,
Crank walk, CW is when the crank has more play than the factory specs. It's a real crappy issue that quite a few 2G Eclipse owners have. Once you get CW the only way to get rid of it is to swap engines that don't have the bad bearings and other stuff that cause excessive wear. Since the block gets more than factory specs wear simply changing parts doesn't make it go away.
