Evolution Imports [Super Mega Merge]
Hey Folks,
Not sure if anyone else has done this but I went ahead and wrote Autoweek a letter to let them in on Adam and his history with Evolution Imports. Hope many of you do the same. Thanks for your consideration.
To Steven Cole Smith, Autoweek, and whom it may concern,
I have been a huge fan of the TVR's for years now. Read about them in many publications and the many comparisons to american muscle including the 'vette and the Viper. I would love to see TVR make it to the states. And i would certainly start saving my pennies to buy one, if only the name Adam Burdette were not associated with it. Adam Burdette, previously of Evolution Imports, has stepped in a lot of number two to get to number one. Well where he is today anyway. There are several of us who trusted Adam to bring in JDM cars. Specifically it started with the Evo 7. It has since moved to Silvia's, Skylines, etc. There were lots of promises and lots of money exchanged hands to try and make it happen. There is a full history on the events that took place on www.EvolutionM.net. Simply do a search for Evolution Imports and you could spend the next couple of days reading through the carnage. Adam took a lot of peoples money and never came through on a car or a refund for most of them. Some folks recieved cars through let's say "creative means" but a majority did not. I consider myself lucky because I was able to re-coupe about 2/3's of my money. There are several who are out anywhere from $1000 to almost $40K. Possibly more. The Florida state police and government have been involved and so has homeland security. Unfortunately no one has been able to get anything to stick and bring Adam's activities to a halt.
I am certain there will be at least a couple more responses on this subject, as I mentioned many have been effected by Adam and his less than ethical business savy. As a publication you reach millions of car folks that like myself are huge TVR fans and upon reading this article may start saving thier pennies and may even hand them over to Adam. All I ask is that before you write another article on the TVR and Adam's business that some sort of "buyer beware" or "buyer eduction" with links to info about importing vehicles is added. I would hate to see anyone else fall victim to Adam. This project may be legit but his previous performance says otherwise.

Not sure how many of you recieved your Autoweek magazine this week, but, one of the first articles in there is about Adam and his partner procuring TVR. I plan on writing Autoweek with my experiences with Eolution Imports and I plan on referencing this thread. This guy messed with a lot of people and to see him get this far blows me away. I am still out $11K after all these years.

The problem is even if you find him, you have a battle to get money out of someone, from a legal stuff you have to go through and whatnot, and even if there is a judgement, its not always easy to get the money out of someone. Sometimes they file for bankruptcy or some other protection to insulate their assets from seizure.
If you deal with it any other way than through the legal system, you will have two options, both will likely put you in jail. If you succeed in getting money out of the guy, then you've robbed him. If you don't, then you've harassed/threatened him, even worse if you resort to anything more. Plus at that point not only are you F'ed, but your chances of getting ANYTHING are pretty much down the tubes.
I'm sure he's dealing with his situation the best he can. The legal system isn't always fast, and settlements can take years, and then payouts can take longer.
Most of these guys had to take this as a learning experience, and make their story known so nobody else can be defrauded.
I'm really surprised considering how obvious all of this was, that this hasn't gone further than discussions in a few forums and some legal action. I would have expected a few magazines to have picked up on the guy's dealings.
Now here's an interesting thing, Adam's other guy, Frank, I think started out as a customer of his. I actually knew the guy when he was up here in NY. I think he might have gotten caught up in all of this being he "got his car".
The problem is importing cars newer than 95 is really difficult, as there are OBD-II issues, and a bunch of other legalities in addition to the previous problems importing non USDM vehicles and registering them.
I personally think that that the DOT and other "powers that be" intentionally create these rules to prevent importing these cars inexpensively and reselling them. But it bothers me that you cannot do this as an individual.
The reason many of these imports come through florida is their very lax emissions/inspection system, plus the fact that its fairly easy to title a car of nearly any origin, once you have a title and some paperwork, you can sell it to someone in another state and its easier to get the car titled as long as the numbers come up on someones computer. So the problem isn't really a problem, unless the state your in does any further checking than just getting the title info. This DOES happen, and illegally imported cars do get seized occasionally, but generally the title is ammended to show ownership only, and contains a caveat that the car cannot be registered and driven on public roads (These titles do exist because of race cars and other specialty vehicles that you need to insure, but cannot register)
I really hope everything works itself out. Its just appalling that a magazine (and even a Tv show that had a feature about the TVR) did very little background if any checking on the "Company" and "principals" involved. Otherwise they would know that this is likely a scam.

I want to edit your post so bad and fix the grammer lol. I'm ocd about that stuff. But no problem. You should call them and still talk to them about it just to see what they have to say and mention the problems they have had before about people not getting their cars or money back and see how they respond. Just don't actually go through with buying anything.

Ohh sorry sir English isn’t my first language
, but I gone give them a call and se what they have to say
Very true.. Though my car had always been highly modified, and was always covered under its warranty. Only I never had any major issue with the car except a 5th gear grind covered under warranty in the first year...
Garbage in, Garbage out.. Your going to have trouble with any car if you hack it up, trash it, Most of the modified cars I've seen are done so half assed, that I won't even touch them to work on them.
FWIW I haven't heard anything about EI in quite some time. I did know one of the guys involved with this company. I think they had a poor business model trying to import brand new cars. They also had really bad timing since they started bringing over Evolutions when it was thought one would not be brought over by mitsubishi. It doesnt excuse their actions whatsoever, and I'm hoping to eventually hear that the people ripped off get their money back.
They have supplied used imported cars to some people, the problem is that importing, titling and registering these cars is shady at best. They get them titled in Florida, then bring them to NY to get the title transferred (another state fairly easy to get a grey market car registered), and probably then get the car titled in another state, and then sell it.
But I have seen two of the imported used cars, with NY titles and registrations and plates (tags).
all I can say is buyer beware, don't deal with anyone "Remotely" and don't send money until you physically have access to the car.. Make sure you get a bill of sale, and inspect the title your given, get the VIN and title certificate ID number, and verify it with the DMV of the state the car is titled in. Also, expect to have trouble getting it inspected properly if its newer than 1995.
