I don't think this is MITS doing this. I beleive Some OEM Dealers are only stocking the Lancer filter to cut inventory. The internal specs are the same on the filters but the EVO filter is a little bigger around and offering a little more filter surface area.
The Denso filter is not all that great of a filter who I beleive makes the OEM.. I would go with AMSOIL or WIX, then Pure One and then the Mobil 1.

FYI K&N filters are the same as Mobil1 filters, just don't have the wrench nut. It sounds like the OEM, K&N and mobil1 filters are about the same in quality. the OEM is almost half the price. I have a couple of different filters I am going to take apart and compare some time soon.
My dealer in Myrtle Beach always kept a couple oil filters and plugs for me in stock because I was 1 of the only Evos in town...Now I live in raleigh and there are a bunch of evos around here so they keep oil filters and plugs in stock all the time...last time i went to the dealer i picked up 4 oil filters for $26 bucks with tax...I ordered spark plugs from MAP...I've used OEM oil filters for the life of my car and I'm right around 45k miles now...i mean if it comes with them stock might as well keep using them...
WIX does not make a Racing Filter for the EVO. Not only that, I would never recommend a Racing filter for anything but a Race Engine and someone with an unlimited budget as the WIX Racing filter has an average of about 61 Nominal Micron Rating compared to 21 Micron for the 57092.

Edited: i did not mean Racing WIX filter.
Bob do you have te specs for the OEM filter and WIX as fas as micron goes.
Absolute Efficiency
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters (EaO) have the best efficiency rating in the industry. EaO Filters provide a filtering efficiency in accordance with industry standard ISO 4548-12 of 98.7 percent at 15 microns, while competitive filters containing conventional cellulose medias range from 40 to 80 percent efficiency.
Less Restriction
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters have significantly lower restriction than conventional cellulose media filters. Their small synthetic nanofibers trap smaller particles and hold more contaminants, resulting in lower restriction. During cold temperature warm-up periods, an EaO lube filter allows the oil to easily flow through the filter compared to a typical cellulose filter. Lower restriction decreases engine wear.
Why would you want anything else?
