bought used: how to identify if the car had a tune previously?

So I bought a used 2005 EB Evo .. it has a test pipe, a DC sports catback and a KN drop-in filter. Outside of a boost gauge and these parts, the rest is stock. The guy I got it from was not the original owner, have no way of contacting the guy who did the mods.

The car pulls really, really hard .. much harder than a buddies stock evo. I know I should get some gains outa these 3 parts over stock, but its surprising how hard it pulls compared to my buddies stock 05. Boost desnt seem to have been changed, its peaking around 19/20 PSI.

Got me to thinking.. maybe the car had a tune done to it. Is there any way to easily identify if the car has had a tune or reflash done? And yes, I've searched and searched and searched and havent found the answer. I do not have access to an engine mangement system or wideband or anything .. trying to see visual indicators or something else where i dont have to plugin to the car or read the ECU .. im afraid the only way to tell is to have someone look at the maps on the ECU, but hoping there is a different way.

Thanks for the help!

The Evo pulls hard and you're worried? =P I wouldn't. Hehehehehehe.

If you have a Evo Buddy with a EvoScan and a Tactrix Cable, all you have to do is just load the ECU up and see if the maps are different.

Only way is to pull the rom and look at it, or just test it out against another evo with similar mods and a tune and see who pulls harder. Oh yeah, if you bought used, make sure your diverter valve is installed the right way. For some apparent reason most of the used Evo's here in LA that I've come across always seem to install the diverter vavle the wrong way. :/

Like mentioned above, you need to Read from the ECU.

Have you seen the Check engine flash at all during WOT pulls? or occasionally? That would indicate the car has a patch, meaning it was most likely re-tuned.

An easier and quicker way if you don't have a tactrix cable is to check launch control rev limit.

Put the car in first gear, with the clutch down, and press the gas. If it bounces off of 5k, you probably have a stock rom.

If it's tuned, it will more than likely be higher, around 6k.

Not true, most people stick to the stock 2-step rev limiter at 5k.

You obviously didn't read the part that said "more than likely"

And almost every tuner I've known will raise the limiter, so don't tell me it's not true.

Trying going to your dealer you bought it from and ask them if they can contact the previous owner for you (then or to call you back when they got ahold of them). I don't see why they wouldn't as long as they are not the ones o contact them and not giving out personal information.

Edit..

Never mind. Actually read the post :P Try asking the guy if he remembers who the hell he bought it from or take a look at the previous history in the title.

You should have a tuner verify your timing especially if you still have stock ROM. Stock tune was for 93 OCT and the best we get in OR is 92. You don't want knock and adding mods to a stock engine/ECU can cause more knock.

You can log your existing tune with EVOSCAN and the tactrix cable. Make sure knocksum is checked on the list of items to scan.

If this is all new to you, check the board for good threads on how to use EVOSCAN. It is daunting at first but hang in there. You are entering EVO academy

Recompile posted some really cool videos on how to tune and log. Logging is a big part of tuning. Once you know how to log, you can work with a tuner via email and they can use the logs to adjust to your mods.

While Portland/Vancouver area is a big drive from Eugene, (you have the perfect freeway car after all) there are places here that offer dyno tuning. You will get a couple of pulls, and your ECU checked/adjusted for a fair price. English Racing hosts these as well as a few other shops.
Have fun and stay away from curbs

My car was re-tuned and it never ever throws a CEL.

At most, get a tactrix cable, DL mitsulogger and check for knock.
