EVO IV noises
EVO IV noises
Hey guys, recently posted my Evo IV I just picked up this weekend. The car is overall really clean, especially the under carriage. My question is when im turning I hear a tire rubbing noise coming from the rear (dont think they are actually rubbing due to the fact that they are stock wheels and stock ride height.) My tires may be too wide (205/50/R16) but im not sure...could this be the rear dif? I believe the IV was the first year for the AYC but not certain...anyone else had this?
thanks!
Chris

Not a ton of experience with AYC in the states, but I could imagine a noise from a differential being made while the two wheels traveling at different speeds (such as when you're turning) if there were an issue with clutches internaly maybe. You'll need to take it to the shop for someone with experience to diagnose the problem successfully.

a few questions
1. Knocking type noise or a constant scraping/rubbing noise?
2. noise only occurs under full turn (like when youre u turning) or even when you turn around slight corners as well?
3. whats the level of atf fluid like in the reservoir - its in the boot in evo vii's but not too sure about the iv

if your ayc IS making noise then it may need an oil change and bleed (granted that thats where the noise is comin from). try to get an evo IV workshop manual, it will give u the proceedure before any of t the MUTII stuff that our newer manuals have. i got one over the net u just have to do some searching

I know where you can get the evo4 workshop manuals online if you need it. You might want to jack up the car so all 4s are in the air. Try turning one of the rear wheels by hand and see what happens to the other side.
ok checked the rear reservoir and it is barely on the stick. I'm guessing that this is the problem...(hopefully). Any information on how to flush this thing and bleed it would be very helpful...I have access to a full shop so I have everything that I would need.
thanks guys!

And yes, IV was the first to have AYC (VIII MR or 8.5 is the first to have S-AYC) but only on GSR models, unless you custom fit on to RS. Usually the obvious cues are black door handles, black mirror and cheaper interior but it seems your car has custom paint and changed interior. RS are really really rare in Japan though so your car is likely to be a GSR and has AYC.
