I used white litium grease on the crontrols in the dash and by your feet. This helped my sticky controls a ton.

Could be a good starting point for some of you guys and keep your knobs from snapping.

I had this problem on my 03 Lancer and was let down when I found that my 06 EVO IX still had the same problem. I'll need to climb under the dash and see if those crappy gears are still installed. Thanks for the info on the new ones!

Well, i installed the new gears and still have a hard time turning the knob. Don't get me wrong, it helped a little, but it doesn't work properly. I tried turning the blend door gear by itself, and it was a little tough. So i guess there in lies my problem, which is the worst case scenario. I'll call and harass Mitsu again, and maybe can get some help.

Ok I've done this mod months ago and works to some degree. My heat/cold knob would not budge on its own before. Put in a new revised linkage set and still was very hard to turn. Had to get down there and blow out the dirt and dust that is actually inside of the blend box and on the inside gear. To do this properly you have to remove the AC and the dash. Screw that.. I just pried open part of the blend box and cleaned it the best I could. Then sprayed some silicone lubricant on all of the moving parts. Helped out a ton. Knob is a bit tough to turn but it does move 100% now.

Here....

I went to the Mitsu dealer and picked up the gears on wednesday, installed them, and they are definitally a lot easier.
i need to grease my gears and the slide but its way easier than what it was.

So since I bought my car last november I've been meaning to do this, now that it's getting cooler I figure it's time. It's ok from all the way cold to almost half way and then it's pretty much impossible to turn....don't want to try too hard and break the knob!!! So I look and guess what??? I already HAVE the new plastic gears installed I'm going to try some grease but I'm afraid my problem might the blend doors So before anybody goes to buy the new gears save yourself some time by looking to make sure you DON'T already have them!!! There's pictures in this thread that show you the differances and you can tell what kind you have without even taking anything apart!!!

It was pretty esay, took me like 15-20 mins, and i used a SOG multi tool. if i would have had a stubby phillips screw driver it would have been much easier.
that being said, overall its really easy.

What did you have to do as far as lining things up? to make sure when you turn the knob to cold the piece installed makes it go to cold. lol

After 5 years of difficult turning, my temperature knob finally snapped off in my hand this evening.

I did some searching on this site, and found people reporting prices from $360 to $2000 for a dealer to fix this same problem. I don't understand the discrepancy in reported figures. If it's $360 I'll bring it on Monday. If it's $2k I'm going to burn down the dealership (I jest).

Anyone got some solid pricing info?

I'm not too interested in a DIY solution. I'm teh suck with tools.
