Hey man, I am still working on my heater control issues. So far I have the entire dash apart, the front crossmember dropped and parts of the heater unit/blow assembly removed from the car.

Today I removed everything to the right side of the heater unit: the blow assembly and intake duct that runs into the heater case. I have removed all bolts holding the heater case against the firewall. However, for the life of me I cannot see how to remove the big, white heater case without clamping or draining the refrigerant and engine coolant like the service manual says.

Does that make sense? How exactly did you do it?!

If you need it I can scan the pages from the service manual that I am looking at and maybe it will help to clarify some. Please let me know!

 

To remove the the big white unit without draining the refrigerant you must open the case in two halves. Remove clips the holds them together, to assambly it back together use smalls screws about half an inch long. It's like the process to open a shell.

I am going to take a shot at it tomorrow! Haha, thank you though. You have saved me some towing charges to have the thing taken to the dealership for a refrigerant discharge and such! I hope this works! I will surely let you know.

Hey man, cracked all the clips earlier today and started to pry the case apart. Judging from the diagram and the resistance I believe I still have to drain the engine coolant and pull the heater core along with the heater box. Correct?

 

You're right. Remove the 2 heater's lines.

 

same problem here they are hard to turn i might pick this kit up

Hey man, drained the coolant, pulled the clips down for the heater pipes...any trick on getting those suckers to budge from the metal pipes of the heater core?

Obviously, they weren't made to ever come off or allow anything in. What did you do? Tug on them? Heat them up with a hairdryer or something?


AND....finally, the revised blend door or blend door kit you buy according to the TSB, did they change anything? Or did you not use the kit?

ok just to make sure this thread is if knob will not turn all the way. my hot/cold knob does not go to the hot side the other two are find what part do i need to order and is this a easy fix??

Your first order of business is to order the revised gear sets. They are on the first page of this thread.

If that doesn't work, your only choice is to do what I did and drop the dash and try to get to the heater mix box. FYI, it's not fun and takes 20+ hours of labor here and there. I'm still working on it. Hopefully your's will just be the gears or a bent wire! Get in there and check it out!

Regardless of your problem though, you'll want the revised gear set.

 

so, when i was turning my temp control knob, i was cold and did it in a hurry. genius me snapped the shaft. now my knob has a piece of the shaft stuck in it. so since i'm not as ralliart savvy as you guys, i was hoping to get some help. does the part (7801A110) come with knob and the stem? or are those separate parts that i need to order? i guess i can try to take a pair of pliers and pull the piece out of the knob, but i'm deployed overseas right now and when i get home it will be HOT! and luckily for me, the temperature is stuck on hot. so i'd rather order all the necessary parts online and have it waiting for me when i come home. usually when i go to the dealer they never have the part i need, so they need to be ordered. so, is there an online parts store? i can't seem to find one. and if the shaft and knob do not come with the gear sets, do you guys know the part numbers? Thanks everyone! reading this thread definitely made me feel like less of an idiot for snapping the knob off. now i'm more mad at mitsubishi for not recalling this issue. because of them i'm going to feel like a woman going through menopause with effing hotflashes! Thank you!

The part you listed (7801A110) is just the link and lever kit that goes on the side of the air mix box. (Big white thing under your dash.) It is just what the very first post shows pictures of.

You did what I did when you broke your's...so you're going to need to get the HVAC control unit from someone on the forums here or pay Mitsubishi about $200-400 depending upon where you get it from. They make you buy the whole unit including the HVAC faceplate surround.

Check Mitsubishiparts.net for better prices than your local dealership. Even with shipping they beat most everything.

Also, just in case anyone else has more problems I wanted to give an update on my repair. I have the entire thing done and the dash is going back together!

I plan to write up something that's pretty comprehensive in a separate thread so that everyone knows how to completely fix the problem rather than having to read through multiple pages of this thread.
