boost controllers-man or elec
hi guys
I wanna get a boost controller. What r most of u guys using, manual or electonic?? I just can't figure why i would wanna adjust it, i use my evo for cruising around the place, not trackdays. Why would anyone wanna turn the boost down when it's just as easy to drive off-boost??
Is a boost gauge necessary if I get a boost controller?? Why?
sorry for the dumb questions.......i'm not very boost-savvy LOL
cheers

ps. sorry if this is not posted in the right thread

An electronic boost controller seemed to hold boost better for me on stock turbo, just helped with the taper. Now, with an ETS 58 trim kit, external gate, etc, I just use a manual and I don't see any taper problems. Not really sure why that is, but I saw a lot of annoying taper with a manual controller on my stock turbo.
Yes, you need a boost gauge. Regardless of whether or not you have a boost controller. It's helpful to see how much boost the car is running every time, plus if it feels slow and is running less boost, you'll know. Turning up the boost with the boost controller, you definitely want a gauge. How are you going to know how much boost you're running? You don't just turn up the boost and be done with it.

if you are on the stock turbo i would say to get one of the electronic ones cause like jake said they can hold a tad more up top because the stock WGA's spring just cant hold higher boost at the top. thats why you will see a lot of the stock turbo guys running a higher boost that spikes and then bleeds off. i had a turbo smart one that on my stock turbo that helped hold boost at the top end. the features it had were in excess and i honestly hated having to start the car, waiting for the boost gauge to do its startup sequence and then set it to my high boost setting. cause honestly i dont need the car at kill 100% of the time but incase i need the power i dont wanna take a second to set the EBC where i need it.
with my front facing 35r i have a halman on there and it works IMO 10 times better. i hop in the car let the fuel pump prime and start it up. much simpler. its also under hood so i never have to worry about wanting to finger it and up the boost and screw my tune all up by adding boost that its not set for.
plus if money is a issue a MBC is a lot cheaper and easier to install. just my .02 cents

+1 but one better you should concider getting a 3 Port Boost Solenoid to replace you OEM one and have you tuner tune that. Holds boost much better then OEM, MBC, or EBC. Do a search in the ECUflash forums for 3 Port Boost Solenoids

I run an electric that also functions as a boost gauge. (Blitz SBC iD) functions very well and has many options that no manual would ever be able to reproduce (speed dependent boost settings, scramble mode, warning functions for overboost, etc etc) I feel that although they are more expensive and more complicated to put in, a quality electric boost controler is well worth the money.
