Check this out (this is what happened to my first Evo). You decide if it's "safer" than the typical garbage lancer.

You have been warned.
Sure glad you made it out.......That was extremely serious......Looks like it was wrapped around a pole.......The first pic blew me away (I thought you were in the proverbial "Box").......God Bless you Bro

Back on topic........My RS doors are so light not offering a lot of side impact protection

You may want to see how much it costs to insure either vehicle - for the same type of coverage. That should give you an idea of safety - hospital bills are a main driver of auto insurance costs.

yah these days seems like everything is getting beef'd up for safety. I always thought an Evo was generally safe due to the fact it is used in rallys etc even though they have them for full race it still seems more solid to me than other cars.

For the street one thing I know is that one of the most dangerous things for rear passengers is a Harness Bar. But I have never EVER seen a crash test for a evo. I found this on msn autos.

that's sort of what I was wondering about is the test for the Evo. I was curious if anyone had ever looked at the way a door was put together on a basic lancer vs. an Evo.

The only way Mitsubishi or any other company is allowed to put a car on the road is after performing crash safety tests. Maybe in this case they were performed on the lancer, and since they share the same structure, the evo was also ok. maybe they are classifying evo results as lancer, who knows.

As far as those pictures go, it looks like a nasty accident and im glad the driver is ok, but the car's condition doesn't indicate it is unsafe without a little context about the accident.

last, the evo x definitely has more safety features than the 8 or 9. it has more airbags, and who knows what else. feel good about your purchase!

side impact will vary depending on speed, what you hit, what hit you, and how you tried to avoid it. that being said, any japanese car door without airbags is gonna offer pretty much the same protection. it's only a couple of pieces of sheetmetal with some bracing and a window in the middle. if you're going fast and wrap yourself around a tree, it's not up to the door, it's up to god. that guy with the wrecked evo should pray everyday.

Being heavier creates more inertia when you hit something, I would think that this wouldn't always be a good thing, harder to stop, for one.

just check the safety of the new lancer
the evo should be similar to that
but much better
due to chassis strengthening and they have more layer of metal on the chassis to make it more solid
not only will it improve the handling
the chassis strengthening also increase the strength of the car overall incase you have an accident
as the evo is much faster than the lancer
they have more safety precaution measure as neccessary to pass compliance test
you should not worry about this
nowadays the car is very safe however china made car is an exception, its not as bad as 10 years ago, theres a benchmark now

i think that original poster meant that the metals used to construct the new evo are heavier/i.e. stronger. if youre the one being hit, that heavier weight really shouldnt be a bad thing.

front airbag sensors are mounted on the radiator core support, side airbag sensors are mounted in the b and c pillar. so in this accident, the airbag sensor would not be trigged. it is not a malfunction.

Warned how? You give us no context. Were you hit by a 747 on a landing approach, or a biker on a Trek mountain bike?
