Question Starting her up on a cold morning...

Question about the sluggishness felt when driving the evo first time on a chilly day: This is probably more a generic question than a evo specific question, but what's going on that makes it a little sluggish before it warms up? Is it condensation in the fuel lines? Is the combustion chamber not warm enough to burn up all the fuel being sent in, so its running extra rich? Are there any upgrades that help with cold morning starts?

I'm still an auto newb, (as is probably apparent by my shot in the dark guesses), so know that I'm missing some basic knowledge that might make this an obvious question. But any info would help!

Thanks fellers. Long live evo.

This is the answer to your question. Enjoy

Your supposed to warm up your car before you drive it... Let your car warm up until it idles at 850 rpm.

If the top solution fails you must live in cold climate, and you would need 5-30 oil weight.

To the haters on this board: Stop *****ing and start answering questions!

no.. i know what this guy is talking about..

it's weird!.. i've never felt it with any other car before.. and i've had a few.. last one was also a turbo 4g63, btw, and it didnt have this!..

it's a very odd feeling.. especially between shifts, it's like there's a vacuum in the engine or something..

as soon as u've drove it for a while though it goes away...

performance vehicles require a little TLC when driving.. ie warming them up, and letting them cool down when you park... the evo is just like a woman, treat her right and she will treat you right

During the warm up process the car, like most cars, will run super rich. This helps to get the cat warmed up for emission purposes.

My RX7 did this. It actually would only make about 7lbs of boost too. I would drive it all nice nice till it warmed up. Then, the first time I would open her up, it would only make 7 lbs of boost. Go to the next stop light and get on her again... 11lbs of boost! Every morning. I think there is something in the wastegate that maybe wont let you make full boost till properly warmed up

yep, same here. My car will really hesitate on a 1-2 and 2-3 shift and won't make full boost. I spend about 5 mins in the morning warming it up and try to keep the revs down until the temperature gauge has climbed above the bottom line.

I hate to imagine what the worst case scenario reason could be for this. Could you imagine IF it wasn't boosting because the turbo bearing was getting sufficient lubrication because the oil was not up to warm up temps?

But like you I spend a couple minutes letting it warm up. Once the tach drops below 1000 I know I'm good. But I have not had any problems with this, but then again I don't make full boost until the temp gauge reads completely warmed up.

just an FYI you should never EVER boost your car when your water temp is even a fraction below normal operating temps.

No doubt.. I had sluggishness from 1st to 2nd but now I let her warm up about 2-3 mins first. You guys are right about it being like a girl .. you gotta preheat the oven
