front axle how to? any extra how to tips or posts help.
You can try and spray some Liquid wrench or pb blaster on there. Hit it with a rubber mallet a few times to get the PB blaster or liquid in there working. See if it losens it sup.
put the lower ball joint back in place to give support, thread the axle nut on level with the end of the axle shaft and hit it with a hammer. Or use a hammer and a punch if you have one in the indention in the end of the axle to free it from the hub.
easiest way i do it is to:
1. remove the nut/bolt on the lower ball joint/control arm
2. remove both strut bolts
3. make sure to remove the clip that holds break lines in
after that is done the hole assembly will give you more than enough room to pull axle out.
if you're getting held up removing the axle from the splines on the rotor side, try taking the axle 32mm nut threading it on until flush with the axle take a 2x4 or chunk of wood and sit it on the end of the axle and tap away as soon as it breaks free remove the nut swing the assembly out, and go to trans side, if that is stubborn a long flat head and a couple taps with a hammer should get it to pop out.
after that you should be mint.
Hope this helps.

well i launched off 2 step tonight and my evo started knocking while turning hard to the left, if i try to go in a circle the steering wheel feels as if its wanting to go to the right instead of the left as if its fighting to go left? you think this could be the axle? other than turning there is no sound and no shakes or problems?? if its the axle which one is it? how can i tell?
ok so i found this thread because i just found a small tear in my driverside front axle boot and now its making a horrible clunking noise when i go over bumps. Off topic i know but do you think i should just replace the whole axle? thanks for the advice.

if it only makes the noise over bumps it probably not the axle making the noise.
Taking out the axle is cake. Just follow any "clutch removal" FAQ/How-To. Axel Nut, ball joint and bottom strut bolts and your good to go. Rubber Mallets or Hammer+wood works good to pop out the axle. Drive bars or whatever they are called get pulled out with a slide hammer+chain+bolt through chain.
That's my noob input!

I worked on my Subie this week. Both inner boots were slinging grease from the small end. Anyway, one axle was loose in the hub and the other (passenger - road gutter side) was rust welded.
On a Subie there isn't a castle nut on the axle. Instead they use a nut with a flange that you pound into a slot. Well, I already had my air chisel out to release the nut. So, I put on the bit that comes to a point and inserted it into the hole in the end of the axle. The axle was no match for the air chisel and came right out. No fancy puller needed.

I have a question about getting the new one all the way in. I took the old one out no problem. I replaced both front axles. The problem I have is with the drivers side axle. I cant seem to get it to seat all the way with the transaxle and I'm leaking gear oil. I've even had them send me a replacement axle and I'm having the same problem. The passenger side axle has given me zero problems. Am I missing a grease seal or something between the axle and the transaxle? If I'm to vague let me know maybe I can take a pic. Any help would be awesome. My car has sat in the garage for a week and I miss it.
If it doesn't slide right out, odds are the splines are F'd. I would use the tool above (of course you took the castle nut off)

Seriously guys I trying to remove the passenger side axle, and the thing will not come out at all I been on this for hours taking breaks from getting pissed or just tired from working so hard. Have the hammer wedged in there to give leverage and a pry bar nothing. Slapped it a few times with rubber mallet nothing. Had wife hold up the axle because I was thinking the weight of the axle was making it hard to come out nothing. I am about to medevil on this b and start f'ing things up.
The axle is held in the cases by a c-clip. You have to either use a pry bar up against the case where the axle goes in and pop it loose or go to your local auto parts store and rent there tool that is basically a slide hammer that will help get it out
