3 corroded wiring harnesses... need lots of advice!!!

So the other day my ANTI LOCK light came on. It would turn back off if i shut the car off but then came back on as i start driving. I went to the dealer today, DENNIS IMPORTS in Columbus, OH to get it all checked out. They told and showed me that 3 of my harness connectors are corroded due to what they think is water damage. (there was white like powder around and in the connectors) .This is 3 of the 4 (i believe) that is located near the kick plate panel (whatever u call it). They said the water prob came down from the sunroof hose? so the 3 that are corroded and need replaced are the instrument panel, floor, and chassis. They said those are causing me major electrical problems and therefore they cannot correctly scan what my abs and srs light being on means. so guess how much it would cost to replace all 3 harnesses! $4500!!!! with labor.

What do I do!!!!!!!

you can get all those here on the forums from wrecked car part outs.

easy job, and a whole lot cheaper than 4500.

$4500? You're getting ripped off.

If it can still drive, take it home, do some research and replace the parts yourself.

If you aren't mechanically inclined, find another shop that deals specifically with Evos or imports in general.

$4,500 my ***. Sorry man, but I can buy a decent used car for that money. Thats about a years worth of rent for my ***.

yea im still driving it, even though i dont have abs half the time. Im hoping it doesnt affect anything else soon. (knock on wood) I'm gonna be doing a lot of search in the part out! and taking it to a local tuner shop to see what they can do. Im not going to pay $4500 to repair it, cant afford that and i'd be better off trading the Evo in rather than pay that. My buddy who's a toyota mechanic says toyota usually just replaces the pins and connectors. any ideas where i can find those?

Look into the electrical gremlins thread. You need to fix the crappy patch job Mitsu did in that kick panel to keep water out or more corrosion will ensue.

You should be able to clean up the corrosion and solder/sleeve the wires to protect them too. You could get use help from someone that's good with electronics, regardless if they specialize on Evos.

Go buy a soldering iron($20), some solder($2.99), an electrical connectors box w/strippers($30), and a case of beer($20). and have at it (drink when you're done).

total cost $72.99.
total savings $4,427.01

Not if you take your time and do one wire at a time. Only way to go

Normally I am a little uncomfortable soldering too many critical wires that aren't clamped in place. These wires don't see too much in terms of vibration but solder will make the connections brittle and you could end with intermittent connections after several years. (Engine bay wires see these problems much quicker.)

Ideally you would cut the cables, and get some decent connectors and use new connectors. If the area is sealed well there is no need for weather proof connectors, but they aren't that expensive. However doing connectors well normally requires the correct crimping tools. This could be done easily by anyone that does electrical/electronics work. (I love Deutsch connectors, but there are lots of cheaper options.)
