So i went to Mac today, for you who have been keeping up with my posts, and Nick told me that the car is tuned for E85! Well i got the 91 out of it and filled it up with E85, and it idles great, and drives well out of boost. the problem is, when i get into boost, it starts to sputter, and severly misfire it seems like, and also one time it popped really badly. this is all at about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle and 3000 to 4000 rpm. What is this? Is it Detonation? i don't see how it could be seeing the high octane level of E85. i was also thinking it could be the plugs or fuel pump or fuel filter? Any ideas i will call mac about it tomorrow, and they are checking the tune on thursday or friday. i know the plugs are from the factory, and the car has 80,000 miles. also i know the car has been running the wrong type of fuel for a little while now..... Dealers are dumb
So the dealer said that it would cost me 180 to change the timing belt, and that the tensioners and the water pump are just a way for mitsu to add up the costs. The problem is i'm a co owner of the car, and my father in law is trusting the dealer that screwed us in the first place to do it...... If we don't get these changed are we looking at trouble ?
Timing belt, yes. Water pump, you can let it go for a little while, but it should be okay if it isn't leaking, but at this point your already 20,000 past the recommended replacement time. Did you inspect the water pump? Look okay? I would get the car running properly before messing too much with the water pump.
You could have some 93 octane left in the tank on your first batch of E-85. This is why I got the ethanol gauge to specifically tell me what the concentration of the fuel was in the mixture being sprayed at that specific time. I wouldn't wait too long on the recommended service, though. Last thing you want is one of the belts going and severely screwing the timing, once they go, say goodbye to the motor.
To save some money I would go on mitsubishiparts.net and buy the parts from there, save a little on the parts then trust whoever you have to (dealer) to get it put in. That way you are still getting OEM parts at a little discount. PM RussellM on here, he can help you out.
Best of luck

Well i'm more wondering if we just get the timing belt and the water pump done and none of the pulleys or tensioners are we looking at trouble? The dealer is just being really dumb i feel like and my father in law is trusting in it. They said that the water pump and timing belt had to get done thats all, the other parts are just to increase cost(-Balance Belt Tensioner-Balance Belt -Timing Belt Tensioner -Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley -Timing Belt Idler Pulley)
Are you sure it's on an e85 map in the ecu? What is used for map switching or is it just tuned for e 85?
I would say do the belt and tensioner. Wouldn't worry as much about the others. My local mitsu dealer only does the belt lol.

Mac said the last thing they tuned it for was E85 for the last owner.... and since then its been from dealer to dealer. so its probably had 91 in it for the last year. It threw a cel, Rich and tps, and has not done so since E85. The map could be changed i don't know but Mac thinks its def an E85 tune and they are going to pull the tune on friday and check it and dyno the car to see whats up.

So just for future info and to add a good piece of knowladge to the forum, as you can see my evo has been having hesitation issues, and jerking and sputtering and misfiring.... Well a new set on Br8es spark plugs at .026 and she is running like a champ fast as a raped ape and no signs of these issues so far

Check your plugs an throw some OEm platinums in gapped at .22
2nd thing I would do is PM some of the tuners on here and ask them to take a look at your map (need ECUFlash which is free and a tactrix cable if you access to one) and they should be able to tell you what octane its tuned for hopefully by looking at the timing and fuel trims.
