Changing hotside of a 05' Evo
I'm kinda new to this whole turbo thing so please forgive me...
Is this what I need to make my 2005 turbo like a EVO9 one?

Hello,
I have a 2005 evo and from what my tuner and Robert from FP said. The 05 10.5 hotside is the same as the evo 9. the difference lies in the compressor side. and the shaft. Cause i was wondering myself. I was wondering if i could send in my turbo to FP for upgrade and just use there 84mm surge port (Flow advancement housing) he said yeah BUT the cartridge would need to be changed prolly(due to different bearing size lol) and ALOT of hotside's they getting have cracks and would most likely need a new one. So it would be just better to get a brand new GREEN,RED or BLACK, or do what MR. EVO MR said . Hope this helps
THANKS,

The 2003 and 2004 evo 8s have a 9.8 hotside which provides a quicker spool compared to the 2005 evo 8s and 2006 evo 9s 10.5 hotside which provides more top end hp. The evo 9 turbos have a slightly larger compressor housing.
You should not want to change the hotside on your 2005 evo 8. Rarely do people change it to go to a 9.8, but actually most people upgrade their 9.8 hotsides to a 10.5.
You cannot make your evo 8 turbo into an evo 9 turbo. The only thing you can do is swap them. Find a used evo 9 turbo (or new, if you wanted to spend the extra money) and then you will need an evo 8 to 9 conversion kit which is $100 from FP (it has different lines and j-pipe to fit the evo 9 turbo onto your 8).
Definitely do some more searching on this topic, it is how I learned it.
What are your plans for the car? If you are looking to upgrade the turbo slightly, look into a BBK or FP Green. They can make 400+awhp and are similiar to the evo 9 turbo because they are built off the evo 9 turbo housing design.

Changing the hotside of your 05' evo turbo would just make the hotside bigger... the 05' MR VIII came with the bigger hotside but its not the same as the IX turbo. The IX turbo has the 10.5 hotside and a Bigger compresser housing so NO, it would not be the same as the IX turbo... just save your money and buy a IX turbo for 300-400 dollars and get the biggest bank for your buck!

I beleive that statement is opposite... that is why in the IX's they made the hotside bigger and compressor housing bigger! It is so the exhaust gases can exit faster which in turn creates faster spool! That is why a IX makes more hp at a lower RPM than an 8 and better high end as well!

Tons of fail in this thread
03-04 EVOs have 9.8 Hotsides
05 IIIV's and 06 IX's Evos have a 10.5 hotside. The IX gets The updraded turbo biggier compreesor housing and such but still 10.5 Hotside
Any USDM car has the exact same turbo in it for that Model Year GSR, MR or RS
All 03-04 GSR's and the 04 RS have the same turbo
All 05's GSR's, MR's and RS's have the same turbo
All IX's GSR's, MR's, RS's, GSR SE's, and MR SE's have the same turbo
/End Thread
