You may have overboosted and popped a clamp or intercooler hose loose. Do you have a boost gauge to confirm you are reaching full boost? Do you "feel" any loss of power under WOT in boost range?

Your intercooler pipes or intake. Check all the clamp/hose/coupler connections from the intake onto the turbo, the turbo's j-pipe to the lower intercooler pipe (LICP), the LICP to the intercooler's passenger side, the intercooler's driver side connection to the upper intercooler pipe (UICP) and all connections there on all the way to the throttle body.

Recently i changed the air filter from a big cone filter to small cone filter. When i did this change my car made a little explosion sound ''back fire'' so i pulled over and checked everything out. Everything seemed to be ok but my service engine light ''CEL'' came on. It turns out the car was over boosting so i put the old filter back on but it is still doing the same thing. I also saw the MAF was a little dirty. I wanted to clean it out but for right now i am going to stay away from it. Is this anything that can be fixed?

now that i understand what your saying i can try to help you.

1. what brand is the old and new filter????
2. is this car tuned?

you seem to be hitting fuel or boost cut. if you MAF is dirty clean it out with APPROVED MAF cleaner.

Yes, take off the filter and check the MAF for gunk. The filter may have been over oiled. That could explain the CEL however, it does not explain the "explosion".

Are there any modifications done to the car?

Sounds like a boost leak. When you are at wide open throttle (WOT), are you able to reach full boost?

the car is not tuned the only mods that r done to it is the air filter. and wen i had the big cone the car felt just fine no problems at all it was only wen i switched it to a smaller one that it started acting up so i put the old one back on to hopefully go back to normal but it didnt. the car at wide open throttle feels like it wants to turn off kinda like wen someone runs out of gas

Again, I will ask you, do you have a boost gauge to monitor your level? Does it "feel" like you are not getting full power?

Do you have a warranty because honestly, we cannot really help you much more because of the lack of details. Maybe bring it to Mitsu. and have them diagnose the problem or a shop that deals with evos.

my guess is it is not the filter then. if you put the other one back on and the issue is still present then you have other issues. i think your hitting boost cut. but i dont know without seeing the car.

IMO get the car tuned. but before you do that change your plugs, boost leak test, clean your MAF and air filter.
