I think the OP learned his lesson but the car should have never be taken that far.

Rod knock isn't your typical everyday noise. For that carnage, it had been knocking for quite some time.

Ever hear a pulley belt tensioner go? Or a bad ac consdensor bearing? Or maybe really loud lifter tick? All are commonly confused as rod knock.

1- I have never heard a belt tensioner sound like rod knock, unless you're talking about the timing belt slapping the cover, which is a noise you should pull over for.

2- AC condensors dont have bearings.

3- Lifter knock loud enough to sound like rod knock is a major problem!

Glad ya didnt get killed! Holy ****! Next time you hear a strange new noise, you'll probably figure out what it is first? Lesson learned I'd say.

I actually have warning triangles and a reflective vest in my car just for this exact situation.

That and it's required to have for military in Germany. I just kept it and thought it was a good idea.

That's some brutal damage. My heart goes out to you. I know what it's like to have you Evo out of commission for an extended amount of time.

Holy crap glad you made it out ok, but always listen to your car. They'll tell you if something is wrong. I always get any weird "noises" checked out if I haven't heard them before.

I was in the bay area, they would have just thought I was crazy

I definitely learned my lesson though! I'm just new to the Evo world so I'm still learning...
Thanks for the concern everyone! I definitely appreciate life a lot more now and try not to take even the littlest things for granted. You really do never know when you could go!
