Price for repaint... please speak from experience

Before you read this or post anything, be aware that I'm looking for either people that have had their Evo repainted/received a quote for or a professional that has repainted an Evo (or something similar in size/shape like an STI or Lancer). If you're only gonna guess please don't waste your time or mine.

Now with that out the way...

I've searched around a bit and haven't found a clear answer on this, only guestimates ranging from $2k to $70k (doesn't really help much). I want to start planning for this now so I can start my paint fund and have it ready when it comes time for paint.

When I return from my tour in Korea I'm planning on getting my Evo repainted. I'm sick of having a black car and my paint is beyond repair anyways (rock chips out the ***, various scratches, etc.).

Haven't decided on the exact color I want but the three I have in mind are BBY, Honda Championship White or Spark Silver (from the new STIs). I don't believe there's anything special in the paints so these should be relatively "cheap".

Most of the removing of stuff (engine, floor sills, back seat, trunk stuff) will be done prior to dropping off for paint. Also the roof, hood, and trunk would NOT be getting sprayed (as they would be getting replaced with CF)

As of now there is no major body damage (whatever dings there are will be fixed prior).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Does any bodywork need to be done? I'm getting my Evo painted soon as well by a local shop that has a very good reputation. Hood and trunk will be carbon as you mentioned. The only difference is I'm painting the engine bay flat black.

The cost I was quotes was $6250, but that's with minor bodywork

Out of those 3 I would do Championship White and throw on some +22 TE37s in bronze. That would be downright sick!

No body work will be getting done. I'll be doing it myself.

Shops will charge around 10K here for a colour change, jambs, engine bay, basically everything. Our shop prices are 120+ hr.

If you did it yourself, you're looking at around $1500. Assuming really decent materials, a nice Sata gun. And a LOT of time.

If you could get someone to do it for around 4K that would be a good deal but I would worry about quality.

+1. You can get a very cheap paint job that is just the outside. basically covers everything you can see for around 3500 or so. that wouldnt include the insides on the trunk, hood, doors, etc. yer lookin at a good chunk of change. i would make sure that it's really worth it if i were you. you can get the paint fixed on your car. kind of like a touch up, where they go over your paint and fix all the blemishes and chips n stuff for around 2000. probably your best bet unless you are dead set on a different color.

I didnt get the whole car done but I had to get dri side fr and rear door and pass rear quarter panel and roof painted due to vandalism (got keyed when I first bought the car). The body shop billed the insurance 3500. Now doing a whole car the same color will be close to twice that since they pretty much did half the car on mine. To do it a different color is even more money because of the time involved to do door jams, engine bay, stuff like that. If your dead set on a different color your honestly probably better off selling your evo and buying one the color you want.

If you plan on doing all the work yourself to include spraying the car, you could get it done for under 2K easily. I run the body shop section of Maintenance back at Scott AFB and have painted handfuls of cars on the side as well. Your biggest decision is what brand of paint you want to use. I used Dupont Centari (acrylic urethane) when I was at Kunsan 2 years ago and I love that paint system. Figure out what paint you want to use and save up for it. There's quite a bit to buy for it.

You can cut down on your costs as well by using the paint booth at the Hobby shop on base. I rented the paint booth at Macdill 4-5 years ago for like 15-20 bucks a day. I did all the prep and body work in my buddy's storage garage and drove it to base to finish it. I did all the work myself along with a few friends on occasion (and a few cases of beer for them for the help) and the total cost was about $1500.

If you have any questions I'd be happy to help you out, just shoot me a PM and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I'm deployed to afghanistan right now, but I usually am able to get on here once a day for a bit.

^ Originally I was going to paint it at one of the hobby shops in Hawaii before I came out here. Only thing is I don't really trust myself with spraying it yet. If I could pick up a beater and just practice though I'm sure I could get comfortable with the idea.

I would really like to get the car professionally done though while I have the motor out (going to Buschur for a build after I return from Korea) but if it's gonna be north of $5k (which is what it's sounding like) I might have to suck it up and do it myself.

Thanks for the insight. I'll be sure to hit you up if I get more questions.

No problem man.

If your able to pick up a hood or a fender or something to practice on I highly recommend it. You'll be able to save a lot of money if you have the ability to spray it yourself, and spray it while you're having the motor built.

For sure man, if you have any questions about any part of repainting the car let me know and I'll do what I can.

my evo was repainted because someone decided to vadalize it and the total cost was about 5 grand. There was no body work involved. It was just a simple respray of the car using the factory color.

if you have never picked up a spray gun it'd be risky tackling an entire car as a first project. Or at least something you want nice (not a 5 footer). What you might think about is get a small gun and do the jamb work yourself. Then go from there. This is labor intensive with lots of masking and parts removal so even if you just do this part and then turn it over to a pro you will save a lot of $.
