Japan Bound!

Okinawa specifically. I am currently digging through a mound of information on shipping my car (2006 Evo IX SSL) to Okinawa. So far I have read about; the inspection every 2 years over there, the 2-5 thousand dollar importation fee on vehicles, and insurance.

If any of you have done this or tried to do this please let me know how your experience went. I have been without my Evo for 2 of last 3 years due to deployments to Iraq, but I don't know if I can deal with my car being put into military storage for 3 years

For those of you who are about to flame on me for not wanting a JDM car don't even post up. I don't want to buy a "skyline" or something else JDM. I will only be over there for 3 years and I don't want to get attached to a vehicle and then not be able to bring it back with me!

I read through your post and there is some good info on pricing. I am going to talk to transportation here on post either Monday or Tuesday next week. Per the information I have read thus far I am authorized to ship one POV or put it in storage.

What I am still wondering however is that since the EVO was built in Japan would the importation taxes be as high as other cars that are not Japanese? I am still reading up on this anyone feel free to chime in with their experiences with this.

It's a lot of money and a lot of hassle to do. Once it arrives on mainland, you have to pass a JCI inspection and if you don't, you cannot drive it. Then you would have to ship it to Oki once it passes.

I could undestand if you were going to be out there for a while. But 3 years is not that long.

i would say purchase a car once you get to japan, and leave the evo at home and just buy parts for it. can pick up something nice for fairly cheap there. Ive been there 5 times.

I don't have any experience on shipping cars over seas...but it does not sound like a good investment. GL with your choice and have good time in Japan

true true.

But yea definently now the best thing to do is ship it there, and try shipping it back. Unless the Military is going to pay for it all. But what i would do is garage it, buy a S13 ($1000-3000) and call it good. Come back with 3yrs worth of part to be installed
What branch of service are you??

remixx thanks for the info, from what i have read the inspections are very strict. the only thing i would be worried about my evo not passing is emissions. as for those of you saying sell my EVO well that is not happening so please stop posting i am trying to get some useful info here!

i guess i will find out more next week when i talk to transportation and see what they will cover. this will be a accompanied tour with my wife and child so i would expect most of it to be covered.
