EVO vs. 2.5T Legacy - anyone else fence-sitting?

I don't like the New Age WRX, or I would have gotten one two years ago. I'm almost positive I'm getting an EVO (and yes, I have driven one - makes waiting suck). But since I'm not in a financial situation right now to get an EVO, and the '04s will have a better resale, I'm waiting 'til February/March for when the '04s arrive. This will give me a chance to also hopefully sit in the new Legacy at the auto show. Doubt it will sway me, but I've always liked the Legacy, and now that it's lighter, the 2.5T engine would make it a pretty nice car. Yes, they are two way different cars for two different market segments, I know. I think, like most people, I have (at least) several different needs/wants in a car, highly dependent on where I'm driving, how I'm feeling, who I'm with, etc. So it comes down to either favoring that side of me that wants a fast, awesome-handling less-luxury/less daily-driver kind of car, or favoring the side that wants something fast, good-handling, and more luxury/more daily driver... I'm mostly leaning towards the former, but it'll be nice to sit in a Legacy to help me make up my mind.

On a side note, I think it would be an easier decision if they'd offer the dark gray from the MR - that color is by far the best on the current EVO, IMO.

Maybe you should look into the new Saabs based off of the WRX sedan and wagon. If you want a luxury car, steer clear of the Evo. Its been a great daily driver for me, but its definitely not a car for everybody.

Let me clear up a couple things, might help make your decision easier:

1) The resale of the Evo isn't going to get any better than it is with the '04 models. If anything, I'd think that the resale value of the car will be higher for the '03's since it was the first year in the US. Offers some Unique-ness to the car.

2) To my knowledge, Thunder Grey won't be an option on the US Evo's.

Now, with that being said...Can you honestly tell me that if you were driving down the road in your new 2004 Legacy and you saw an Evo go screaming by you, you wouldn't be kicking your self in the *** thinking, "Why oh Why didn't I get an Evo?"

maybe this will help:

Mitsubishi Motors wrote-
The 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution sedan is not for everyone. It was never designed to excel as the next great idea for shuttling kids to the mall, carrying loads of groceries, towing jet skis, or navigating grid-locked traffic. Though the Lancer Evolution series of compact high performance sedans has proven capable of executing such routine tasks, this entire family of highly developed sedans was developed for the sole purpose of domination in competition as a Group A and Group N rally car in World Rally Championship.

Now it has arrived in US showrooms as a street-legal thoroughbred that challenges enthusiast and race drivers alike to go faster, compete harder and exploit the car's incredible performance. Lancer Evolution is a car that goes, stops and turns unlike anything else in the current North American class of compact, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedans.

In fact, it is a vehicle in a class all its own. Featuring a DOHC, four-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled 2-liter 4G63 engine that generates 271 horsepower and 273lb. ft of torque, competition-proven all-wheel drive, Brembo® brakes with Sport ABS, Ralliart-massaged suspension, Recaro™ seats, carbon fiber rear wing, HID headlamps, MOMO steering wheel, dedicated ultra-high-performance Yokohama tires and 17-inch Enkei® alloy wheels, the Lancer Evolution combines surreal road holding, shocking acceleration, purposeful styling, telepathic responses, and a sense of control found in few other vehicles on the planet.

This eighth edition Lancer Evolution high-performance sedan is a super car that begs for long expanses of uncongested, curvaceous roads and drivers willing to conquer challenging asphalt. Yet the vehicle also offers the practical capacity to carry four adults.

The Lancer Evolution is a series that relies on a near zero-compromise approach to build a limited production performance sedan that satisfies homologation rules for top tier rally classes, and the desires of an obsessive enthusiast set who will accept no substitute for performance, all while remaining an affordable practical vehicle for everyday driving.

With the creation of an undiluted, uncompromised performance vehicle -- born from a corporate desire for conquest in motor sport - that still satisfies realistic needs, the Lancer Evolution family has succeeded in being perhaps the most exciting of all Mitsubishi vehicles and best represents the essence of the company's commitment to producing spirited cars for spirited people.

As a flagship vehicle encompassing passion, engineering technology and astonishing performance capabilities, Lancer Evolution is the epitome of the Mitsubishi brand.

No, no I can't. Damn good point.

I wonder if everyone on this board called up Mitsubishi and said "give us Thunder Gray" if it would make a difference. Hmmm.

The guy I work for was on the committee which voted out Thunder Grey. No matter how much begging I did to him, there was nothing he could do to bring it back.

Just get your Evo. You won't even care about any other car afterwards.

I see a Turbo Legacy in my future when I'm done with the Evo (or as an additional vehicle).

The Legacy is going to be a sweet ride. I think you'd be happy with either.

The resale value on the Evo is going to suck irregardless of whether its an 04 or 03. The vehicles are selling for 23K wholesale already. Do the math. It's not an investment, don't make it one.

I love seeing car enthusiasts try to rationalize car purchases!

The crux of the thing is that since we are enthusiasts, the practicality and other rationalize-able, tangible things about a car usually take a back seat to the irrational fun factor that we expect to derive from ownership.

So I say if you need a wagon, get the Subaru. If you really want to enjoy what you drive and be involved in all that comes along with having a high performance sedan, get the Evo.
