Just want to be 100% sure that it IS in fact removed from the cam by removing just the allen bolt in the center of the gear.
It was a b!tch to take off, I ended up stripping mine and having to take it to a shop, but it's a 14mm Allen size, I went all over the place looking for a tool, even sears didn't have one, probably the only thing I really dislike about the Mitsubishi
If you are talking about the Exhaust Cam on a 2006 IX. Their is a 14 mm allen made of aluminum that must be removed first. Under the plug you will find the bolt that holds the cam gear on.

Hey Nipplesevo, I didnt ask your opinion on whether or not I should be doing something or not. I asked a simple question. I did it right by confirming first the right way to do it, versus other people just jumping into something without knowing. Theres several sets of bolts on the mivec cam gear, I always double check before doing something.
And yes the 14mm allen is just a plug and then the bolt is underneath. It was straight forward, to those of you who helped thanks for not being a tool.

My Evo's apart right now and the cam gears and sensors were left on my old cams while they were out of the head.
I bought S3 cams because I was upgrading from S2's, and I just sold the S2's the other day so I was taking the sensors and gears off so I could ship the cams to the buyer.
Actually, you can get it from amazon.com for only $9.73 (plus free shipping, if you buy another $15-worth of stuff that qualifies for Super Saver Shipping):

Sure, the Gearwrench 14mm allen socket is made in Taiwan, and isn't exactly the same quality as the equivalent part off the Snap On, Matco, or Mac tool truck. But for someone like me who's likely to use it all of 2 or 3 times in a lifetime, it's perfectly fine. The cap on the MIVEC gear is aluminum anyway, and that oil plug is more likely to strip and need to be replaced before the allen socket is going to show any wear.
Also, just FYI: don't lose that unique washer with the integrated rubber seal that sits under the MIVEC plug. It's part #MD623114, and it's SEVEN DOLLARS. Guess how I know.
